that's more like it ... end of the flood?
... thought i'd jumped in a time machine and travelled back to 2004-2005 the way we played today.
gone was the ultra-defensive uber flood and negative mindset. instead we played positive, attacking football and backed ourselves .... and surprise, surprise .... we won in a canter. funny about that.
begs the question of how we could have been as bad as we have been as often as we have been this season.
was very pleased with the form of raph clarke and goose, both very important players to our future. raph should have gone some way towards quietening the knockers with his performance today. with him, imo, it is all about confidence ... and when he gets some look out
i think we should stick with the ruck combination we used today and use kosi exclusively as a forward just to really stretch our opponents over the next few weeks.
blake was terrific. i'll bet many have forgotten how effective he can be as follower. virtually gives you another midfielder and he's no less effective in the tap-outs than rix or kosi imo.
i hope RL learns from this outing. we've shown him what we can do with a bit of confidence and with our backs up.
no need for "numbers behind the ball" today. we played bold, risk-taking football and reaped the benefits, kicking a cricket score for the first time in ages
vossy did more than enough to keep his spot and goose looked almost back to his old self

Nick Riewoldt said on SEN after the match that NOTHING had changed in terms of gameplan and structure during the week, and that the players had just worked on executing what Lyon wanted.
It paid off ...
Decision-making, disposal and kicking for goal are three things that make any gameplan work well ...

They should only play AFL games now when it's raining. Slow games of footy are so much better to watch.

what would Riewoldt know, I'll get my info from big carl, dodger, dan warna and other luminaries on this siteOh When the Saints wrote:Nick Riewoldt said on SEN after the match that NOTHING had changed in terms of gameplan and structure during the week, and that the players had just worked on executing what Lyon wanted.

and as for the very strong praise for Lyon from Harvey and Koschitzke, obviously they are in no position to know what's really going on, I much prefer to get my inside info from dodgy, who has his hand well and truly on the pulse
DO THE MATHS AND THE SQUARES ARE ALL ROOTED.
Actually thought we flooded as much as we ever have today. Looking from above on the MW there were plenty of times when we had noone even close to our forward 50 at all when the ball was the other end. One notable instance was when Sam Fisher broke free, bounced twice and had to "kick and hope" into an empty 50 because noone had got back in time.
The diference was that we controlled the ball better when we DID attack from defence, thus allowing us to have G etc there in time.

The big difference was that we took risks when we had the ball today.
Something we haven't been doing at all this season.
We were accountable when we didn't have the ball.
We did not stop attacking either. That is a change from previous weeks even when we've won (despite what any player says)...The proof has been in the performances.
This is the way we should have been playing from round 1.

crazy
totally agreed, we played on at all costs, ran it hard, went the first option and backed each other up.Life Long Saint wrote:The big difference was that we took risks when we had the ball today.

we took risks and played on at every opportunity.
sure we got hurt on the turn over a couple of times, but we attacked, ran in packs, shepherded.
a few times we lost it, or kicked stright to the opposition but it was attack attack attack and it paid off.
i would also say we made as many mistakes as games we lost and had as many turnovers as games we lost, but when we did that they were in Their D50 and we had every opportunity to pressure them.
may not be the end of the flood but chippilotto wasn't there.
nice to see so many long kicks, risks etc.

I wouldn't expect them to openly bag the GP to the media Barks......especially if it actually works.....
IMO max going down helped with the free flow of the game......otherwise Sam would have been advised to get loose (a role I hate him playing), and it would have put a free in front of Frase....takes 10 goals from a game......and it doesn't happen by accident

You expect a new coach with his own style of play to be mastered from Rd 1?.....you do take yourself seriously dont you.......Life Long Saint wrote:The big difference was that we took risks when we had the ball today.

Yes
agree
RISKS AND PRESSURE
At the Bulldogs game 2 weeks ago, once we lost possession we literally had players just turn their back on the play and run back to form a wall at the defensive 50.
Today we manned up a lot more and had players harrass and pressure the ball carrier.
My favourite was X mans chase and tackle in front of the Moorabbin wing.
And surprise surprise it created pressure which lead to turnovers.
We scored fairly freely today.
Partly because our disposal was better.
Partly because we moved the ball quicker.
Partly because we took some risks and backed the superior skills of our forwards.
And surprise surprise Gehrig and Milne thrived on quicker and better delivery.
RISKS and PRESSURE.

If you make the assumption that Ross Lyon was brought in as coach to take us to the next level where Thomas could not, then our plan needed a tweak not an overhaul. The general feeling on this forum was that we lacked a plan "B" when our plan "A" did not work.Teflon wrote:You expect a new coach with his own style of play to be mastered from Rd 1?
We had a list that made the finals three seasons in-a-row. In all those seasons we had a number of key players missing through injury. This tells me that our base game plan was sound. We got ourselves into winning positions in most games we played.
What Ross Lyon promised to address was to make us more accountable. Which is a positive if we can master it.
He had an entire pre-season to work on that.
We didn't need to be reinvented!

I have never said that we are Sydney nor have I said that we are trying to play like Sydney. What I have said all along is our game plan does not suit our strengths.Teflon wrote:So we still Sydney all over again?

I dont accept "our base game plan" was sound at all. Whether you call it plan A, B, C, OR Z we fell over many times in 06 and truth be known sides worked out this sound game plan IMO. I simply dont beleive sides were prepared to take us on in a shoot out any longer and we could not cope. If thats your idea of a "sound" game plan fair enough - its not mine. particulalry when the coach and assistants have said we based a lot of that game plan on the Lions style - whicjh IMO was swiflty being outmoded by the more recent direction of the game whichto me is largely rebound based via runners.Life Long Saint wrote:If you make the assumption that Ross Lyon was brought in as coach to take us to the next level where Thomas could not, then our plan needed a tweak not an overhaul. We didnt approach a new coach to "tweak" Thomas style - we got a nedw coacjh cause the game plan wasnt standing up when it mattered AND the ENTIRE footballing Dept needed outside help...which Thomas wouldnt have a bar of.

That's not what our president said when interviewed on Fox Footy. He babbled on about needing to model ourselves on the Sydney and West Coast football structure. He lamented that Thomas could not speak Generation-Y whatever that is.Teflon wrote:We didnt approach a new coach to "tweak" Thomas style - we got a nedw coacjh cause the game plan wasnt standing up when it mattered AND the ENTIRE footballing Dept needed outside help...which Thomas wouldnt have a bar of.
The game plan was never mentioned as a reason that Thomas was sacked. The more that has come out between RB/GT this season shows me that decision to sack him had very little to do with the on-field performance of the football club and more of a pi$$ing contest between two blokes who should know better.
I agree that Thomas' stubborness probably cost him his job. And it nearly cost Mark Thompson his too. But he yielded to the wishes of his board and allowed a football manager to help out. Interesting to see where the Cats are now with the stability of a constant senior coach. Ironically their "brand" of football is closer to the Thomas brand than the Sydney brand. It'll be interesting to see if it stands up in the finals.

looked like the 2004-2005 game plan to me. whatever it was it worked a treat. i agree with you Life Long Saint about our willingness to take risks.Oh When the Saints wrote:Nick Riewoldt said on SEN after the match that NOTHING had changed in terms of gameplan and structure during the week, and that the players had just worked on executing what Lyon wanted
it has been largely absent this season and has cost us bigtime

IMO this was out best game for the year, and probably best to watch aswell
the only thing that was a downer really was our last quarter, which we lost again, should have really won by 10 goals
very happy tho
oh, and Teflon, its obvious that GT was responsible for the gameplan today, as i hear from someone in the know that he SMS'd it to Riewoldt, who intern passed it on to the rest of the players in the huddle before the game
duh!
