Goose...Stress Fracture

Post: # 493583Post The Fireman »

Here we go again.

ST KILDA defender Matt Maguire has another stress fracture in his left foot.Scans show the inury that severely hampered his 2007 season has flared again.
The Saints last night confirmed Maguire would miss the next four to six weeks of training.

Given the history of Maguire's battle-scarred leg, the club's medical staff is certain to take a cautious approach.

"We had a precautionary scan done and it found a stress fracture," St Kilda head of football Matthew Drain said last night.

"The diagnosis is as good as it can be, but he will miss four to six weeks. It's not ideal, but that's what it is."

The injury is to the navicular bone that famously gave former Essendon champion James Hird so much grief, but the Saints are confident it is at the lower end of the scale.

"Matt is disappointed, obviously," Drain said.

"The fact it's happened now is the only positive."

Maguire felt soreness after a running session early this week.

The setback is particularly frustrating given the 23-year-old's past issues with his left leg.

Maguire had multiple operations on the leg after breaking the tibia and fibula in a gruesome collision in Round 18, 2006.

He suffered complications with compartment syndrome in his calf and spent 21 days in hospital.

Doctors had to cut into his calf numerous times to clear the build-up of blood, with ever-increasing difficulty repairing the wound.

Maguire was originally expected to be sidelined until the middle of this season, but made a stunning recovery to be back for Round 1 against Melbourne.

It was short-lived with scans revealing a stress fracture in the left foot.

The club initially hoped he would mix six weeks, but the layoff stretched to three months.

Maguire managed to return to play 10 matches this season, but struggled to find his best form after so long out of the game.

He started the pre-season intent on recapturing his best form next season on the back of an uninterrupted program.

Stress fractures are a risk for players returning from serious leg breaks.

Richmond's Nathan Brown suffered a long battle with soreness after surgery on a broken leg.

Not a good sign.

The club's medical staff have to ensure this injury is managed as well as possible.

Goose, probably more than most, needed a full preseason.

Not the best news but better now than in Feb.

Its footy - injuries happen

Lance or James??

There comes a point in every man's life when he has to say, "Enough is enough." For me, that time is now. I have been dealing with claims that I cheated and had an unfair advantage in <redacted>. Over the past three years, I have been subjected to a <redacted>investigation followed by <redacted> witch hunt. The toll this has taken on my family, and my work for <redacted>and on me leads me to where I am today – finished with this nonsense. (Oops just got a spontaneous errection <unredacted>)

They don't just happen, they are caused by super natural powers conjured up by Carltank supporters and directed at us.

In a recent thread about top five most important players for 2008, Goose's name appeared many times.. It seems that many on this forum, like myself, feel a fully fit and firing Goose is integral to our success next year.. lets hope this is a week thing and thats it...

It's not the best news.

Hopefully he can make a speedy recovery and it doesn't badly affect his pre-season efforts.

In my mind, he is a vital link in the chain when it comes to our chances of lifting the 2008 Premiership Cup.

Not good news for the Goose, but yeah its better for it to happen now than right towards the end of pre season training. Was a shadow of the player we know that he can be this year, and will be a crucial part to our success next year, so I'm hoping that he can recover from this and still manage to get a solid pre season, even if that means not having him for the first few matches of next season.

I feel sorry for him.
Hopefully it is only 6 weeks so he can have some pre-season.

Chin up Matty

Sorry to hear this latest challenge to Matty's career but he has been through the worst with his 3 weeks in hospital last year and fingers crossed he gets over this obstacle.

Play it safe Mags and keep doing all the right things.

Anyone think this makes us more likely to pick up a KP defender at no 9? Based on the last 2 years, we have one aging injury prone fullback, and now Matt's unfortunate injury spell lasting about more than a year.

The main reason for our failed campaign last year was when we had no defence and Gwilt was forced to play as a FB

Well as Goose is now running laps the 4 to 6 weeks original estimate of when he would be training again was accurate :)
