my bold prediction(s).
raphael clarke improves out of sight, becomes a truly elite player, and laughs in the face of the critics who had him written off and wanted him delisted halfway through last season.
lynch impresses and plays senior football in 2009.

Good point - and don't forget Bradshaw. He kicked 75 to Brown's 70.n1ck wrote:Good odds but a team with J Brown and S Black will never win the wooden spoon.
My tip is BL to finish 9th. They couldn't take a trick away from home last year, even losing to Melbourne once... Sydney to sink. North to miss the 8, if just. Wooden spoon a toss-up between Melbourne, Freo and Port. And St Kilda top 3.

I will go one further.
St Kilda will make the 2009 Grand final.

Pretty much doing what we thought he always would?spert wrote:R Clarke may have a very good year in 09, as he stood up in the finals of 08, and did better than some of our more experienced big-name players.
That's not a knock on him, I hope he follows up this year and continues to improve.
Only prediction I have is the Brownlow: J Selwood.

1) port will be the only interstate team in the finals
2) only one of the cats or hawks will make the prelim
3) richmond will make the top 6 and a prelim
4) brisbane will win the wooden spoon
5) essendon will give lots of teams scares
6) BJ will be top 3 in the brownlow brett harvey wins
7) two high profile footballers will get suspended after testing positive for a third time. Will turn the season on it's head and one very good side will slide very very quickly
8) freo ends up 9th and misses because they lose the unlossable to a surging melbourne (third win after 19 loses in a row)
what grinds my gears is that people up here confuse jealousy for genuine dislike of a football club, its players and its supporters
their football club is built on success from extra $$$$
the players especially the younger ones have plenty to answer for with the law
and the supporters and bandwagoners in hope of a repeat premiership with their aging stars...hanging on in hope
oh and the smugness

surely this year is the last chance for terry wallace. tiges have to finish top 6.
i agree with the poster that this will be a bad year for interstate teams . really hard to know how the lions will end up...
sounds like something saints supporter would say after the 2003 season...

IMO Brisbane's already hit the bottom of their curve and is on the way back up. They've got some risk around Black, Power, Brown (29,28 and 27 respectively), but there's really nothing putting a drop dead date on the careers of any of these guys right now. Johnstone is also 29, but on last years form isn't a key player, so a better year from him is gravey in '09. They've also got some good midfield and key forward prospects coming through, so while there doesn't seem to be another impending dynasty on the way, I wouldn't expect the Lions to join the hunt for a wooden spoon anytime in the forseeable future...n1ck wrote:Good odds but a team with J Brown and S Black will never win the wooden spoon.Little Dozer wrote:Totally agree with this. Unless Voss managed to fulfill the doomsayers predictions.
I think there's some wishful thinking from those who enjoy seeing the Lions down (totally understandable, especially for the QLD non-Lions fans. The smugness up there can be ordered as a dessert topping), but after years of not giving kids a chance unless they forced their way in ala Brown (in the course of things costing them players like Jason Gram), when the slide started, Brisbane was pretty quick to acknowledge it, start testing their youth and rookies, and turn over their list. Adcock and Rischitelli are now proven AFL mids, Dalziell looked awesome last year, and they just drafted the highly touted Daniel Rich. All 25 or younger and a decent core for a midfield.
And the home ground advantage of the Gabba should not be underplayed. It's not quite as tough as Subi, but definately ahead of Football Park, Telstra Stadium, and the SCG as a difficult opposition ground.
At 17-1, any money bet on a Lions wooden spoon is money thrown away.

$17 for a BL wooden spoon, is a bad bet.
Their spine is actually pretty good. The kids are coming on, & they cut some dead wood in 08. Rhan Hooper is still a problem, but if he gets his act together, the kid can do some freaky things.
But the main reason they wont win the spoon is THE GABBA.
The sudden switch from a melbourne winter to an afternoon game in sunny 27c cant be discounted. And pretty simply we cant win there. (I would hate to see the cumulative total of the last 10yrs of defeats at the gabba, would not be pretty)
