Steele is a Captain in any side.
Think Gears can play at both ends in a defensive role the final against WB was huge.

Re: Gears 2022 100%
Exactly, not even close to best 22.
Hopefully he’s not handed the captaincy again and pushes a younger better player out. Would be extremely selfish on his part.

Re: Gears 2022 100%
Curly, we've finally found the perfect position for Sinclair and you want to move him? Hill moves out of the backline, Paton takes his place.
In the forward line we've Higgins, Butler, Gresham, a resting mid plus two to three talls or medium talls.
Geary, I admire and, as saynta has pointed out, is a role model for training and commitment. He's more a mentor / assistant coach than a player. He is back up but his value is at Sandringham.

Re: Gears 2022 100%
Bless him and kudos to him for making the most of his talent.
Nope he’s not the skipper. Steele is.
Maybe keep him on in a mentoring role, but he is past it as a best 22 player. No way he should be keeping a young fella out of the team next year.
Kent on the other hand……there is no reason at all to keep him.

Yeah maybe. But a hangover from the Richo years. Be glad to see him retire and thank him for his service.desertsaint wrote: ↑Fri 20 Aug 2021 8:17pm good on the club. fqf.
great leader, handy backup. will be a great mentor for the youngsters in a team with far to few good role models.

Re: Gears 2022 100%
Don't get it, no disrespect, but he is done.
If we want him down the club, give him a coaching role.
Steele is our Captain now.
Paton, Webster, Sinclair, Coffield, Clark all better defenders.
Are we happy for him to take games away from Connolly or Byrnes or Bytel??
It smacks of sentimentality.
Unless it is a very cheap contract and he is playing coach for Sandy, it's a mistake

Impact injuries. If young players are better let them win their spot.

Re: Gears 2022 100%
Wouldn’t be best 22 any more. Only way he would get a game is if others are injured. Would rather see a young player on the list. Maybe his experience and mentoring is why they’re keeping him. Can’t see an justification as a player an more.

You think they haven't, I think they have. If they haven't then we need to keep searching because Geary is not the answer.

Re: Gears 2022 100%
It’s a weak decision from a weak club
Should e been tapped this year was his send off he’s cooked well and truly
It makes you wonder how this joint is run ...unprofessional
If he keeps out Connolly cause of Ratts poor selection then Ratts done in my book
Really poor decision/mates rates favour
I’ll bet he doesn’t play regular at Sandy and he keeps a kid out cause he’s part of the “in” crowd

Re: Gears 2022 100%
If he's not handed a captaincy role and, let's face it, he shouldn't be - Steele's got that gig for as long as he wants it - then younger blokes will earn their place a long way ahead of Geary.
Fine soldier, but his time has passed, and the game has passed him.

Re: Gears 2022 100%
and there is why we re-contracted him and also why we picked up Frawley. Under the covid reduced coaching/admin spending caps we can't bring them on as coaches because there is a minimum they must be paid for those roles and it would push us over that cap. Sure there's also a playing group cap, but it's easier to squeeze players onto minimum annual + extra per game contracts (only a % of their pay is included in the cap due to being veterans) at the cost of a list spot which at best would've been used on speculative rookies who likely would never play anyway and who also come into the cap at full price.
Obviously the club sees his value being there is worth more than losing him for a whole range of reasons, and I think a lot people forget the benefits players have access to when on a club list (education, medical, fitness, etc.) which they're happy to sacrifice some possible higher salary for.

Because if he has the C next to his name he is an automatic selection regardless of form.
It’s embarrassing.

Re: Gears 2022 100%
Good grief there are some is some lack of thought on this subject
Firstly so many assumptions that he would captain again, who knows, certainly none of us, Yet all the criticisms start again, selfish etc. Such disrespect.
Secondly, clubs need experience and leadership. Have a look at our leading seven games played players. Ross (2), Billings (3) and Dunstan (6), quite possible that none of these would be around. So if you threw in Geary our most experienced player after Hannebery would be Membrey on 129 games.
Can any of the detractors explain how that would be a positive situation?
Thirdly can any knockers take us through FQF?
