Sigh... ‘97.... sigh...saintkid wrote: ↑Sat 28 Sep 2019 8:33pmMy dad was there and reckons it was the worst he felt ever after that 97 GF loss. Could not believe how stale they were in such a huge game for the club. Then he had to witness Jarman destroy Shanahan in that last quarter. Still can't believe why someone like Sziller didn't take him the arrogant pri*k out. We were the hot favourites and it was absolute torture watching them bolt away like that in the last.

Re: 2019 Finals Thread
Read an interesting article q&a on Matty Lappin today in the Gold Coast rag - said in 97 no one at the saints had any idea how to prepare for a gf and how different it might have been if there was anyone in the club with premiership or gf experience, that the players got caught up in everything. He then talked of the difference at Carlton two years later. Experienced players who had been there- they were much more settled (although less chance of winning)zsaintkid wrote: ↑Sat 28 Sep 2019 8:33pmMy dad was there and reckons it was the worst he felt ever after that 97 GF loss. Saints used 97 as a learning experience. 97 crows had Blight coaching his 3rd or 4th GF team.
I was at 97, agree with your dad was awful day. Not sure if we were stale, Crows were definitely as a team collectively more up and about than us.

A fair point there from Matty Lappin. He liked him as a player, clever and a strong mark for his wiry frame and was disappointed we let him go.The Barometer wrote: ↑Sat 28 Sep 2019 11:17pmRead an interesting article q&a on Matty Lappin today in the Gold Coast rag - said in 97 no one at the saints had any idea how to prepare for a gf and how different it might have been if there was anyone in the club with premiership or gf experience, that the players got caught up in everything. He said stale in comparison to the Friday night preliminary final game against North. Said that game was his high point that year, They hit North so hard and played brilliantly from the first bounce. Left North reeling but unfortunately played very differently the following week in the GF.

Downhill skiers don't make good footballers - I should know, I spend 30% of life now I am retired in the ski fields of the world.
GWS have massive talent and can be lethal with ball in hand but Richmond's backs can run off their forward like a knife going through butter.
GWS midfield only run one way making it so easy for Richmond.
Richmond on the other hand are glued to their opponent unless they can impact the play.
They are not in the vicinity, like 2 or 3 metres away, they are inside their opponents shorts.
Richmond are playing the way they play every game 110% effort, GWS likewise effort in one direction, St Kilda effort for part of the game for the occasional game.
110% effort in 110% of games, then come a grand final that is how you will instinctively play.

Yep - and that’s a big reason why I prefer to go the game itself (which is possible being an MCC member). I reckon if it was simulcast on Foxtel like every other game I wouldn’t mind occasionally watching from home

Forget all that - Winmar’s dad died a few days before the Granny and Stewie’s sister likewise. The Barometer wrote: ↑Sat 28 Sep 2019 11:17pmRead an interesting article q&a on Matty Lappin today in the Gold Coast rag - said in 97 no one at the saints had any idea how to prepare for a gf and how different it might have been if there was anyone in the club with premiership or gf experience, that the players got caught up in everything. Re: 2019 Finals Thread
I was there in '97 and you're spot on saintspremiers. Winmar and Stewey had poor games
Adelaide rucks and mids were getting on top of ours and even though we were in front, I sensed the inevitable somewhere towards the last part of the second quarter.
I hoped we could change things up or perhaps throw Barry into the middle in the early stages of the 3rd quarter, but unfortunately Stan backed in his mids. By 3quarter time the horse had bolted
When Jarman went nuts at full forward, we were already stuffed. Their rucks, mids and a bloke called McLeod had won the game for them

Never saw Stewie outmarked from behind before, worst game he ever played I reckon.Scollop wrote: ↑Tue 01 Oct 2019 3:40am I was there in '97 and you're spot on saintspremiers. Winmar and Stewey had poor games

Re: 2019 Finals Thread
The loss of Modra was a godsend for Adelaide. His form going into and during the prelim was poor, he was a liability. If he didn't fall over, D. Jarman never would have played forward and the Crows would never have beaten the Doggies.
It was poor that Alves had a week to prepare for it and not only chose the worst match up but stuck with it.
Big Sira, Hall & Cook should have thrown their weight around when Harvey was being sniped. The fact no one flew the flag for him gave the Crows belief and confidence they were the stronger side.

Not sure the Coleman medalist, All Australian FF and Mark of the Year recipient would have been a liability?

Agree. Adelaide was more predictable with Modra and he was out of form.Ghost Like wrote: ↑Thu 03 Oct 2019 10:12am The loss of Modra was a godsend for Adelaide. A bit like how Jameson went off injured and they were forced to move Ben Hart onto Heater. Up until that stage, Heater was tearing Jameson a new one and we were well on our way to the holy grail.
Everyone knew what Blight was going to do in the second half and Stan had no plan for it. Even Jeansey was trying to send him written messages to make certain moves but the horse had well and truly bolted by that stage. He was badly out coached.

Lazar coming on and Everit going forward was our point of difference in 97. Lowe, Heatley and Everitt were a nightmare match up.

Re: 2019 Finals Thread
Everyone talks about Shanahan on Jarman being the wrong matchup which it was but I think the key mistake was Stan not putting a hard tag on Macleod throughout the game. Lappin started on Macleod at HF and as soon as I saw that match up I knew we were in trouble.
