Hawthorn midfielder Tom Scully has called time on his AFL career.

The 29-year-old informed his teammates on Tuesday morning he would retire, effective immediately.

Spot on here. And it's also one of the unspoken reasons as to why Clarko prefers getting in more mature human beings to his club - rather than pampered private school boy babies who already have a God complex by the time they're drafted.

One of my Directors is a Hawthorn inner sanctum member and Clarko speaks about this quote a bit to that select group. His take is that it's hard enough to get blokes to learn a game plan and execute it without then also having to be their de-facto Father/Life Skills coach along the way. Makes a lot of sense when you think about it a bit more broadly/deeply

Not true. Graham Wright left because Hawthorn is rudderless (in a leadership sense) and a complete sh!tshow in terms of footy. Even since Mark Evans left - and then Chris Fagan - Clarko has been ruling his own roost and has reverted to his loose, angry type (which was the beauty of the Evans / Fagan model as they kept him in check as the wise old heads). Wright and Clarko had a massive blue pre-Xmas and Clarko responded by not turning up to the club for the entire 1st week of training. Pies got wind of the dust-up and pounced (yes, not all is bad at Pie-land).

Meanwhile - Jeff has become pre-occuppied with destabilising Daniel Andrews and taken to sending long missives to Members. Justin Reid hasn't been able to get the cut-through as CEO that Stuart Fox and Ian Robson had (and let's not discuss the Tracey Gaudry disaster)

Maybe that has something to do with being brought up in a system where older 'mentors' reinforce the boys-club mentality and that "she was asking for it" is a legit defence for their actions.

Notice the comment "Patton may have played his last game for Hawthorn". Could not wait to dump him and his salary excess. Already got his replacement - the boy Callow who was touted on here recently.

All the damage is done though before they get drafted. From the time the upper echelon of draftees have reached ~ year 8, they've been groomed to 'be elite' and the narrative that they're great and that they're going to get drafted and have everything they want blach blah blah etc. Then the sycophants pile on the coat tails. How many times do you reckon those kids have heard the word 'no' by the time they're drafted? When your moral compass has been so drastically altered so early - it's bloody hard to then re-engineer a personality and behavioral code back to 'normal human being' setting later on.

I've had quite a bit of experience with players who were really nice young guys as adolescents ... whom quickly turned into pretty ordinary blokes once they've been "through the system".
