I've been wondering where all the comment from our club is, but ...

Drumroll ...

Dunstan signed until end 2017. Brilliant. :D

http://www.saints.com.au/video/2014-09- ... futurefest
The Saints Future Fest campaign will see a host of young Saints committing to the club as part of a united commitment to the club’s future.

Dunstan said he was thrilled to be the first in a wave of re-signings.

“We can feel that something is building. Not only the players, but also the coaches and staff get the same feeling,” Dunstan said.

“There is a lot of work ahead over the next few years, but it’s definitely building.”

Do they overpay the youngsters now and hope they'll accept less-than-market-value when we're serious contenders?

I hope so; it makes sense; but there's still a lot of risk when you're relying on human nature.

Dunstan had next year already automatically… so it was a 2 year extension I guess.

I think Pierce is just a one year extension on top of his initial mandatory draft contract of 2 years...so it only takes him till the end of next year...Good call by the club, don't lock them all in for too long as it's been previously mentioned on here. 1 year, have a good look at him, he may come through...and even if he doens't declare himself by the end of next year, just keep him on beyond 2015, if another club sees something and are willing to pay overs, then he becomes tradeable. I'm happy with this call given our surplus number of Ruckmen...

Pierce has had 2 years including this year, so would be coming to the end of his initial contract now… so it looks like a 2 year extension too.

So is Newnes any chance of being an A-grader next year? I doubt it. But a solid B+

I could see him being similar to Joey. Racking up big numbers with out much fuss so potentially an A grader. He's getting around 20 possessions in the backline so potentially with more access to the ball he could start getting very good numbers.

I would have though he has the most access to the ball. Im unsure he has anything at all about him to become A grade but you need about 10 B graders to be a top side so hopefully he gets to that level next season. He is a C at the moment. Its a very sensible signing IMO.

This drip feed is starting to give me the s***s.

nobody gives a flying you know what about these signings apart from Saints tragics

Its not like Hawthorn or Sydney are keeping all their promising kids. We are the wooden spooner, and these signing are hardly being mentioned in the football news.

Are we going to go through this charade for every single player we sign?

Almost reminds me of those reality shows on TV where they wind out the "suspense" only to go to an AD break then rinse and repeat.

The club are trying to generate some excitement about a rebuilding side who just won a spoon...

It's not too hard to work who they re-signed if the suspense is killing you,

Essentially all players under 25 who are not de-listed... Minus Siposs, Simpkin & Roberton who still have contracts.

Think - Lee, hickey, longer, Markworth, Murdoch, Templeton, acres, Weller, Ross, billings etc.

I was initially a bit skeptical about the approach, but I actually like it.

I think B_M is correct in one sense that the re-signing news appeals mostly to People Like Us and won't get much broader media coverage in the finals, but I don't think that has to be the point.

As dragit says, it's mostly about generating some positive goodwill, and that's in the run up to new memberships being offered for sale in a few weeks time, and what I like about this campaign is that it is squarely aimed at Gen Y.

We need younger members.

But I reckon it has added flow on benefits. I'll give you an example. My late 60 something Mum has barracked for the Saints her whole life, but watches on telly and rarely goes to the games anymore, mostly relies on what she reads in the newspaper and wouldn't have a clue who the rookies and new draftees playing at Sandy are. She thinks the club is hopeless at the moment, laments the loss of BJ and Dal, reckons she doesn't know any of the new players and generally hankers for the late noughties.

I asked her if she was reading the emails about the signings. She thinks they're great, because it's giving her insight into who some of the "new" kids are. She watches all the videos. If the club did it in one hit, it would just be another list of names of people she may or may not have seen play yet.

If people generally have some affinity for the new kids, and what is being announced seems generally to coincide with what the club has said it is trying to achieve, fantastic. The general view from the end of last year that we're a rabble starts to fade into the background. Some of the older members who have dropped off might just stump up again.

So in the meantime, I'm prepared to suck it up and suffer the drip feed.

I remember in the early 2000s the media did it for us and they genuinely built the excitement. With the new franchises seemingly having a monopoly on killer lists and Bulldogs already on the path, we are having to do our own hype. When you don't have much to offer you need to put it in lingerie and make up and strut it about a bit. I believe they call it polishing a turd in the industry.

I really like this approach. Keeps us in the news, but it's being done in a low-key way so as not to make us a 'look-at-me' club who missed the finals and is trying to steal the limelight from the finals series.

I reckon they've got a tricky balancing act about right.

And beats the hell outta' the sorta' stuff that has tended to happen to us in recent seasons...
Lighting-up people at Mad Monday.
Cuddlesgate.
Kimmie D.
Thommo vs Butterss.
Pluggsy vs Mart...

(Actually, I miss that last one. )
