And more on the same subject.

https://www.heraldsun.com.au/sport/afl/ ... 3a99a0cdf1

ST KILDA will overhaul its coaching structure and take an aggressive approach to its trade and draft strategies to help jump back into the finals mix next year.

And new football boss Simon Lethlean indicated the club would target some ready-made players with senior experience who could impact the team’s leadership and training standards in the pre-season.

The Saints currently have pick 4 in this year’s draft period but Lethlean said the club could swap it for multiple picks in the likely event the AFL will allow clubs to trade draft picks right up until the night of the national draft.

Lethlean confirmed there would be change in the coaching ranks following a report former Hawthorn champion and West Coast assistant coach Sam Mitchell would return to Melbourne to further his coaching career next season.

GWS assistant Lenny Hayes, who played 297 games for the Saints, will also be target for Alan Richardson’s men.

Lethlean said the Saints would adopt a different coaching model next year, admitting Richmond “gave us a bit of a lesson about what a team really looks like” last weekend.

“There will be some changes in our coaching side of the program as well,” Lethlean said.

“How many and who any of the appointees may be is unknown at the moment. It’s July so we have to test the market and see who is available and see who is interested and also understand what structure is best for us.

“I have a view on how our coaching structure should be and it’s a bit different to now, so that will mean change.”

The new footy boss said the Saints could have tried some different tactics against Richmond last weekend to limit the damage in the 54-point loss.

“We actually couldn’t necessary handle that level of intensity and teamwork and impact, and it shows you where you are at,” Lethlean said on a club podcast.

“So it was interesting to find out where we are at against the best club.

“I reckon there was stuff we could have done to have stemmed where the result ended up a bit quicker and better and we let ourselves down a bit there.

“We know we have got some work to do, and we know there is a club which does things pretty well and that gave us a bit of a lesson about what a team really looks like.”

St Kilda wants to appoint a new list manager next week.

Lethlean said the club had already held talks with potential recruits.

“We’ll target players to make our list better right form the word go in preseason by way of training standards, impact and leadership,” he said.

“So we are certainly very active in the free agency, out of contract and trade market as would 17 other good clubs.

“And we have had a number of encouraging conversations with players and player managers and lots of those don’t bear fruit for little while.

“But we are active and hopefully it bears some fruit.”

Lethlean said the team’s performance would likely mean the Saints would receive a reduced number of Friday night games next season after four this year."

Lethlean should do everything possible to get Mitchell.
No we should get Lenny as a coaching assistant, he is more experienced than Mitchell.
But why would he ?
Lenny has a far better chance to become a senior coach by staying at GWS.

Let me make it simple for those who can't understand.
You don't improve your chances of promotion by taking a demotion.
And St Kilda is a demotion.

Seriously Caracella is a good chance at a senior coach's job in the near future.
Why would he damage that by coming to us as an assistant ?
Would he even come to us as a senior coach ?
Unsuccessful coaches don't last.
If you take over a pathetic list devoid of any stars why would you expect to be successful.
Why would you expect to have a long career as a senior coach ?
Dream on dreamers.
Out of curiosity Ace, can you give me 3 names, player or coach that would most improve the saints?

level 4 accreditation doesn't prove anything other than you're after a career and so tick as many boxes as you can. like we see in all types of industries - it improves your chances of work, but doesn't by itself prove anything other than you've done the course. The only proof is in the pudding.
list of level 4 (completed or undergoing):

John Barker (Carlton), Stuart Dew (Sydney), Robert Harvey (Collingwood), Adam Kingsley (St Kilda), Simon Lloyd (Geelong), Matthew Nicks (Port Adelaide), Justin Longmuir (West Coast), Jade Rawlings (Melbourne), Peter Sumich, Brett Montgomery, Scott Burns (Collingwood), Brett Kirk (Sydney), Brendon Lade (Port Adelaide), Leigh Tudor (North Melbourne), Dean Solomon (Gold Coast), and Steven King (Western Bulldogs).

There is anecdotal evidence of that*, but I'm not sure that would matter if he got the job done.

If Milat was any good, Galbally would have had him exhonorated, and the AFL would have approved his appointment at colonwood. Outside the cap, of course.

I find talk of ivan milat, a mass killer, extremely offensive in the context he has been mentioned in this thread.

Bit of class please.

Mitchell (or anyone else ) could come as an assistant on an understanding.

The team doesn't improve in the next year or two, he takes over as senior coach.

The team does improve, then Richo stays but his (Mitchell's) stocks are sky-high and he's ready for a senior position somewhere else.

Everyone's happy.

So called 'good blokes' are over rated.

Richo is a good bloke

Paddy is a good bloke.

Seriously who gives a s***?

Sometimes 'good blokes' are dead set f***-wits.

Yeah. Nah.

Carra was involved in premierships at Essendon, Brisbane, Geelong and Richmond.

So yeah. Nah.

We could be aggressive as all hell regarding free agency. Still wont get anyone.

I'd pretty much bank it that we will trade our first pick for multiple second rounders.

Again, another draft wasted.

We are managed by a bunch of asshats. Plain and simple.

I doubt very much we’ll land any FA’s of any note, so let’s spend up and get the best assistant coaches available and maybe next year we might have a better chance of getting some decent players through the front door.

Get Lenny, Mitchell an Caracella

Can't see any of these assistants coming to us. Need to be realistic and face facts. We’re a bit of a second rate destination.

Harvey will come to us and Mitchell will probably go to the filth or something like that.

Also, I'm not loving Lethean’s language. When it comes to what the club is planning to do, he speaks in the first person quite a bit. It sounds a bit egotistical and too self important for my liking. He's only one cog, albeit an important one. I hope he gets it right.
