McKernan was fine, especially late.

Of the newbies:
Higgins - feels like he's been in the side for years
Hunter - Great first game, wasn't against anyone with too much experience but will compete well when needed.
McKernan - Disappointed in his contest inside F50 but held his own in the ruck.
Highmore - Shows promise, some skill errors in the wet
Wood - Thankfully (for lack of injuries) he didn't play.

Incompetent umpiring and dreadful TV commentary but great to win one against the odds Saints.

Clark was great in that last quarter. Really lifted the team and did his silky Pendles thing in the crowd on a tough and slippery day.
Can't wait to see him this season.

We would have dropped this game last year.

In 2012-2019 for sure. In 2020, maybe half the time. We held on for the win a couple of times last year. We are now remembering how to win, and not throw it away.

Yep have to agree - gave good contest in the ruck those last 10 mins especially in the middle
It was a gutsy win - we were down and out but never gave up
Well done boys with seemingly everything against us

Re: Match Thread Saints v Giants Round 1 2021
McKernan is a spud, but a whole-hearted, big-bodied, bull-chested spud, so the right player for those conditions.
I was more impressed with Hunter's agility and defensive ruck nous against a bigger-bodied fellow debutant.
I think we've found a decent back-up ruck there.

Just needs to figure out whatever was going on with that arms in the ruck rule he was repeatedly pinged for.
Otherwise was the best ruck in the ground IMO

Re: Match Thread Saints v Giants Round 1 2021
I thought the umpiring was OK. On the last decision, because there was a prior opportunity, the player only had to be "legally tackled" for it to be holding the ball. The question is, was it a slight grab rather than a push? If it was a push, no free. Slight grab - correct decision. The position of the umpire may have made it look more of a tackle than it was. The previous free was soft, so this may have been a square up softie. In any event, we won by more than a goal.
