May struggle to be best 22, but his leadership is critical. Outside Gears, we have hardly any natural leaders.
Our ability to stop momentum time and time again is a result of this.
We've been run over the top of plenty of times with Gears as captain, often featuring him turning the ball over coming out of the backline at crucial times.
If he is gifted a game every week in 2022 it shows we've already put the white flag up.

One year not big money makes a lot of sense as the alternative is a kid at pick 70 plus which history or the league, not just St.kilda, says will take the same money, not play in the first season and may not last longer than 3 seasons anyway. It provides someone who can come in play multiple roles where injuries hit and also teach at a lower level ( not affecting the soft cap)
And also with reference to the changed landscape due to COVID budget cuts, there is also signifcantly less budget and resources available for development, so using your example of picking young kids, especially speculative low-in-the-draft picks, clubs will really have to spend their development budgets wisely, meaning far less project players on lists and less kids that may need a heap of money allocated towards them over 2-4 year period that may never give an ROI. So hence my belief we will see the average age of lists go up over the next 3-5 years as older and PROVEN players are given longer time at clubs.
Our leaders have not stood up this year at all, barring Steele.
Membrey has missed crucial shots for goal regularly
Ross played out of position but has not stood up
It took a brutal mid season break to get something going
We are desperate for leadership and for that alone I am glad he gets another year. In best 22 as pressure forward.

Will cut Roberton McKernan Hunter Kent Frawley that’s enough cuts.
I wouldn't be too sure about Frawley and McKernan... Ratts gets very excited every time he mentions them and can't wait until they return!
I have no way of deciphering Ratts’s press comments..He is brilliant and there is no way to determine what is fluff, spin or heart felt or brutal reality..He has that earnest and worn expression. It’s the perfect disguise.

Just because StK has made this decision
Doesn’t mean we have to convince ourselves it’s the correct one
Would we be saying ‘good call’ if they decided he wouldn’t be offered a contract?
You know, many poor decisions have been made down at Moorabbin
This would be another.
From my perspective it's not about convincing myself or others about how I feel about the decission one way or the other, but rather acknowledging the rationale behind the decsion. The quality of the product is going to be down for a little while until the Pandemic is over and the AFL recovers financially. So in the meantime I think decissions like keeping Gears on will start to look normal over the next few years. Fortunately most clubs are in the same postion however I suspect the un assisted clubs with better finances will fair a little better, but then again don't they always, but make no mistake about it, even the un asisted clubs will be forced to get creative with how they manage their lists because the talent pool has thinned out a fair bit since the Pandemic started so we'll all be scrappig for the same morsels.

Great leadership makes tough calls
This was the soft option
You seem convinced there were much better decisions available, through the prism of a Pandemic effected league, what decisions would you make after you cut Gears?

100% agree. That’s the question ppl aren’t answering. By all means put the alternative on the table as to who you would keep or get rid of instead

Draft a kid to take a spot on the list
Or
Offer a contract to Mitch Wallis
I didn't realise the Dogs weren't planning on keeping their Vice Captain around for the 2022 season. Could be a great replacement for Gears if he's gettable but sheez it's a big call to boot a Vice Captain and a father Son player.

They won’t give him the boot
He is out of contract and will leave
He is of the opinion he should be playing AFL
He’s only played 5 games this season and 10 in the VFL
Bearing in mind I think Gears would be backup for next year and also to help out in a coaching/development role at Sandy and provide leadership around the club, you'd then have to think Wallis would also be brought in as backup and for crap money so why wouldn’t the club stick with Gears who has well established relationships with everyone at the club. The Dogs would be thinking the same about Wallis.
It make sense if there was a decent pay packet involved but I'd say both players will be on minimum wage next year.
People convincing themselves Geary, ex captain is being offered 1 year to sit in VFL and not take a spot off a kid (Connolly) are delusional- ofcourse he’ll want to play AFL and weak club decisions like this make it clear he’ll get what he wants off the back of “leadership”
It’s bollocks
34 , injury prone, slow, cant kick and is a liability when bringing it out if defence
We must move on
Pathetic IF true

Agree.
We have to try to be competitive. He would not get a gig at any other club except perhaps GC, and I don’t think even they would offer home a year.
We have to be competitive. One precious spot should not be given away for sentimental reasons.

Yep, and they'll probably stick the C next to his name again to make things worse.
