Blind freddie could see the appeal of Jack Steven or Armitage ahead of the garbage McQualter, Dempster and Eddy were serving up in 2010... and Armo vs Dempster in 09

Somethimesi it seems as if ppl believe that because they couldn't see something, others shouldn't have been able to either

So was Armo supposed to play defensive forward in that 09 team?

Armo is and always has been a midfielder.

Dempster played defensive forward. Later goes on to be an AA defender. Shows some defensive skill.

Armo would have been a liability in our forwardline and could only remove a midfielder from that team.

The fact that this substitution is for totally different positions just shows how confused you are.

Very silly.

Tackling and pressure and holding the footy in your forward line is what is expected from everyone. but I thought forwards were selected because they are good enough to win the footy and show a knack for kicking goals

The extreme version of a game plan based on having role players who defend in your forawrd line is that it might work for 3 and half quarters but even if the score is 0-0 at some point the opposition will take it up the other end and outscore you...It's happened on so many occasions and yet people still laud the bloke

I'll tell you what is silly. Giving credit to a bloke who had a team choc full of AA champions and claiming that we wouldn't have made it to the Grand Finals without him

It's also silly thinking that Ross's game plan will ever win a grand final.

Who said we needed him to play a defensive forward?

Why did we even need a defensive forward if we didn’t have a player capable of playing the position?

To add to this a little bit more however rather than taking things out of context, my argument has always been that we went too tall in 09.

Drop King, play Dempster on the unfit Johnson (if I’m remembering that correctly), move Baker to Chapman, have Armitage as an extra mid... especially if you think Ball can’t run out the game.

2010 was when we really effed up because so many players were playing so badly for so long

Armo was AA HBF in U/18s and more than capable in a shut down role.

He also kicked nearly 100 goals in his career. He was not merely a mid.

How did Dempster go in his role of ‘defensive forward’?

I’ll tell you
He had 5 disposals in the 2009 gf

And kicked a goal, which was one more than Milne.

Who or what was he defending? I've got no idea but maybe he did his job on the day.

Either Andrew Mackie 15 disposals or Corey Enright 22 disposals or Darren Milburne 25 disposals

Milne had an average day, 11 disposals, 2 behinds, but you’d select him every day of the week.

Between Milne, Schnieder & McQualter we kicked 2 goals 6 behinds, which ultimately cost us the game.

Not true. Lyon tried it at least on one other occasion including the EF against Sydney in 2011; the last final we have been involved in.

The second quarter of 2009 is painful to watch. Only done it once.

Personally, I'm not a fan of playing someone that is not yet AFL standard solely because they are the best fit for a unique position

Rather than play Dempster as a defensive forward when he was not nearly ready (and not a shadow of the player he would become), I'd rather have played a guy like Armitage as an extra mid and rested guys like Dal or Monty down there for patches

It's a very bizarre strategy to me when the solution is have someone that can contribute less

No matter what you think of Eddy, it was not his fualt that we lost in 2009 or 2010

Nothings changed for the greatest coach to have never won a grand final

He usually praises his senior players but he always finds a way to make excuses when his team can't get the job done.

Ross Lyon indirectly blamed his younger players for the loss against Brett Ratten's Sainters last Sunday

Lol, you going back to under 18s to justify a young players spot in the Grand Final side?

After having never played there in previous 4 years.

Give me more than that to work with, please.

How about this

He had more talent than others selected. And on a wet and blustery mcg in a hot contested game, Armo would have thrived. That’s if Ross didn’t sit him on the bench for half a game like he did with Ball?!
Armo had a staggering 13 tackles in R20, more than any other player had laid in a game in 2009.

Lol.

You insinuated Armo does not know defence. I merely pointed out he was AA HBF 3 years prior.

It was RL's choice where Armo played but he was never limited to being a mid.

*Under 18 AA HBF...

Where did he play in the Under 16s?

How about U10s?

What a ridiculous argument.

Well, guess what, Freo blamed your" greatest coach to have never won a grand final".

And for my part I blame Ross the tosser flosser for our grandfinal losses in both 2009 and 2010.

The though never entered my mind to blame Eddy.

I guess he just ran out of excuses at freo.
