Question about King?

I saw King kick a beautiful field pass to Butler late in the second quarter. A minute later he shanked a shot at goal. The field pass came after a loose ground ball, which he picked up cleanly and then made a good decision with traffic bearing down and it was to the advantage of his team mate.

Butler missed so the ball was kicked in and we managed to win the footy in the centre and Seb hit King lace out with a Banger Harvey short little pass.

I saw Max looking up and it seemed like he was looking at the goals or in the centre of the goals. Classic mistake when taking a set shot. You’re not kicking at the goals or at the centre of the goals. You need to target something that is behind the goals. Pretend like you’re kicking it to a stationary team mate. Pretend like it’s a field kick and I bet you 8 or 9 times out of ten you’ll nail it.

Agree I saw that also. Plus to answer CQ question its just a matter of focus.

I didn't notice what you are discussing but how can either of you tell where his focus was. Im just curious, like if he was fixed on the goals, could he not be fixed on something beyond the goals. How can you tell what he saw or the depth of his vision?

To me, King has yet to show any special football nous or ability.

As an athlete, he is quite special by the standards of our league, because he's 6ft8 and moves more fluidly than most guys who are 6ft6.

To this point, he hasn't shown (that I've seen) particularly special abilities in
- reading the flight of the ball (Battle, for example is much better)
- field kicking (inconsistent)
- goal kicking (inconsistent)
- leading patterns (Membrey, for example is much better)

His ground-ball ability is above average for anyone 6ft4 or above, let alone 6ft8

While he'll get better at all aspects of the game, he doesn't strike me as being a great footballer, more a great athlete. (By comparison, a guy like Spida was both.)

The time will come where his size will make him very, very hard to beat, but I'm not sure he will ever thrive on anything other than his athletic abilities.

Will be interesting to watch how he develops and what his game looks like. Time is on his side

Well that went full circle.
He has taken 74 marks and scored 64 times, in 24 games.
In his first full season without significant injury, he created a multitude of scoring opportunities for the smalls around him.
If Gehrig was in the square we could send him up field where we quite often see Membrey but we don't have Gehrig, we don't have Milne and we don't have Hamill.

Its a little early to worry bit I agree with you, the way it is tracking, he could be anything.

Not many have, nor will many ever compare to the career that Nick Riewoldt had. Thats not who King is, despite the potential some see.

The coach loves deep entries - bombing it to the square - so he wants a target. Unfortunately it's the easiest thing in the game to defend so he is always outnumbered.

Remember Roo had Hamil, Kosi and G-train. He also got to present to Hayes, Harvey and Aussie Jones.

I agree it would be good for him to present to the ball, something I pretty much always bang on about with how we play, but my hunch is he's doing what he's asked to do at the moment.

Also, 'big blokes take a long time' is a cop-out that the coaches seem to believe. It lowers the expectations and stagnates development. His kicking is inconsistent...? Oh well, big blokes take a long time...

He needs to get Higgins to teach him how to kick for goal.

I did speak to a Suns assistant last week but we only spoke about the Saints as he is close with Lade. Let’s call him Wazza. He said Lade was blaming key personnel missing namely Ryder & Marshall for our early season poor form.

Let’s see if that is correct.
