Max King and Round 1

Post: # 1841507Post Secret Kiel »

I'm still not convinced he's earnt his debut for round 1.

He still looks very raw and had he made some of those basic skill errors he made today in a match for points he would immediately be dropped backed to Sandy the following week.

I’m not buying a ticket until the team is picked.

It comes back to whether you think we have a list capable of winning finals in 2020 or whether it’s best to try and develop the right talent over time. Do we try and get sustained success and be worthy of a few top 4 finishes with a list built by the current coach and his current footy department or do they go for broke with the list they inherited?

So therefore I say play Winx in the firsts and keep playing him unless he’s sore or injured

Same with some of our other young talent. If they are following team rules and giving 100%, then give them experience

If he gets his debut round 1 and plays like he did today does he play round 2. As we know, context will be completely different in games for points and if he racks up as many clangers and basic skill errors as he did today then the focus is a lot more intense, especially after a loss.

If he kicks the 3 very standard set shots then he has 4 goals and a very good game.

First time I’ve watched him properly and was very disappointed with his goal kicking. I wish we could draft a key forward who’s a natural good kick for goal.

He has the right attitude, we could make him Captain and wait till everything else clicks.

as I said in another thread, he is really good at everything but kicking at goal. He is laying tackles, taking leads, bringing the ball to ground running back to help out in defence but my god can he shank them. One out on the full while not that far out in the first half and a shot late in the game so bad it knocked a beer out of spectators hand as he wasn't watching because he was not near the goals.

On a plus he can only get better

If he doesn’t play who replaces him? Certainly not a forward..maybe a mid / hbf or hbf
If you want one of them in then I’d drop a small forward first...out of butler sincs and Kent. Prob sincs or Kent

Leave king in I say

It’s just puppy nerves. Expectations and having missed most of last year. Factor in McCartin failure he’s put himself under too much pressure and his mental state is too intense.

Roughy will help sort his mind out.

Relax......that’s all Winx needs to do more of!

Play him. He’s already worth his spot and is only going to get better.

Membrey, Marshall and Ryder are there to help him out. He shouldn’t be the number one marking target, not yet at least. Share it around. Don’t have him always anchored deep.

Think structurally King is very important only really tall forward option who if he’s not marking it will bring the ball to ground for likes of Lonie Butler and co. Also diverts attention from Membrey.

If not in side Ryder/Marshall draw a better defender when playing forward.

Forward alternatives Mayo Marsh Battle more mobile leading type forwards (which king can do) than pull off a pack mark type forwards.

At the very least if he can play 2-3 games early and at least do ok, it’ll just take away the when’s he going to play drama

Exactly - spot on!

As Kevin Sheedy said in an interview, donkey's years ago - you can't train the sort of pressure that a player is under, during an actual game. He then went on to point out that he had players who could kick the ball so accurately, they could knock the water bottle out of a trainer's hand, but under the pressure of match conditions, that player could miss the goalposts by a mile.

King will play first round - I'm guessing the only real question for selectors is do we put him on a pocket or flank or actual full forward?

I liked what I saw - true he missed some - but he was very active and was drawing 2 defenders at times - that can only benefit the team. There is a lot of pressure on the kid - let him get a few under the belt!

You are flogging a dead horse SK.
Max is playing round 1.

If you don't want him in the team, who do you prefer to include instead?

Given you'd assume all of Carslile, Howard, Ryder, Marshall, Battle & Membrey are picked, who do you pick over Max from the fringe group?

Do you want a tall like Brown or Austin, a small forward like Hind or Kent, a small back like Savage or Paton or another mid like Phillips or Langlands?

Who of the fringe group are more deserving than Max of a game?

At this point you have stated neither Max or Howard are certainties or may not deserve their spots.
If you are not sold on two young 200cm athletic KPPs, who do you propose to play instead of them, who is more deserving?
