18 touches at 78% efficiency.

Looks pretty good.

Good size
I think we need to keep Bytel, Byrne's and Possibly Phillips getting regular games.

Time for Steele to captain and Geary to make way for one of these young blokes.

Bytel was the only positive tonight, but alas I fear he may be rested in favor of Ross and Jones next week.

Should not be dropped on that performance

Should be given at least another 3 in a row and see where he is at after that

I cannot imagine them dropping Bytel after his performance tonight. Clearly games are not being gifted, but like Sinclair and Hind who played well when elevated, young Jack has earnt another game .

We are still building and we need to think about 2021 and beyond. Bytel showed enough to get GAMES into him. Even moreso this year with no reserves. Scratch matches are no way to develop a player. It is probably not a coincidence that Phillips looked better in his second actual game.

First draftee we have had for a while who looks like a genuine mid and played like one. Plus he is a good height. Midfield is clearly a weakness for us and so lets play Bytel and see how he goes. I mean what other avenues do we have for a good mid, and landing a gun mid next year is by no means a certain thing?

PS Speaking of the future. Father Time is calling time on Gears. Loyal servant, but his time has come.

I wish he'd had cement boots on tonight....maybe Hawkins wouldn't have pushed about so effortlessly

I didn't think he'd move slower than Hawkins :|
We didn't have a forward structure, we're too far down in the back-line and Geelong always had +1 in our forward line, never going to win that :/

Bytel has the potential to be for us what Sam Mitchell was for the hawks and Simon Black for the lions. (These two are, to me, as good midfielders as the modern era has produced...I'm not saying he will be as good as those two legends, but similar in function)

His ability to open the game up with handball looks really promising - fast, clean, precise - and he's big enough to have good position at clearance.

Yes, his handball was quick, flat and to the target. Impressive debut game.

more than happy with his first game
and if we could "maybe" get the best young mid at the draft ( read: find me a Dangerfield)
I would be happy about the future

and can I add I was a little surprised at his inclusion as I was lead to believe that his team selection was being driven mostly by hype on the forum

What utter garbage. You think Rats and his selection team read the rubbish posted on this forum?

From saints.com.au

Debutant Jack Bytel impressed in his first outing in red, white and black, earning two votes for his promising performance against an experienced Cats outfit.

Touted as a top 10 pick early in his draft year, the No. 23 put in an eye-catching shift in the midfield in his long-awaited maiden senior appearance.

Bytel won five clearances and 18 disposals, but it was his team-high seven score involvements that had Saints fans most excited."

Bytel is a player it’s not even a doubt the performance lived up to the hype.
End of year we have already been told we are going for a FA midfielder- some big decisions to be made there...
2021
FA Mid to come in
J Steele
S Ross
Zak Jones
J Bytel
R Byrnes
D Hannabery
L Dunstan
J Gresham- pinch hit rotate
H Clark- pinch hit rotate
J Billings - pinch hit rotate
I see 1/2 possibly being traded -

I suspect because we were beaten by 10 goals. His turn will come.
