Essendon side ways footy

Post: # 1860948Post johnearljames »

They were very painful to watch. A few players got lots of touches but do nothing with it. Reminds me of us in the past.

If they had have tried to play more open footy we would have slaughtered them more I reckon.

If they were more direct we may have been in trouble.

On the other hand I think we defended quite well, not just the backs but our mids blocked their way forward.

6 goals. Won easily. What game were you watching?

Does had 10 more disposals than us. What does that tell you?

And thank god Shiel didn’t chose us. Two first round draft picks and big coin. Give me Jones any day

Can’t believe the brains trust at the time chased him like they did.

Very overrated player

Essendon just need to bulk up and go down the middle. Unfortunate big injury list; possibly need a specialist medical team. Dank, Hird and Thompson, compounding apothecaries - entrails read - could be the injection they need.

It just shows you that stats don't tell the full story.

Essendon had
9 more disposals
6 more I50s
7% higher disposal efficiency
5 more clearances

BUT
we looked the better side from the opening minute and had it won before half time.

They played a Richo style game which led to slow multi disposal build ups and wasteful I50s that were easy for us to pick off.
Whereas most of our I50s were either
- rapid ball movements that left their defence stretched
- or measured kicks to advantage

Sometimes s*** sides drag you down.

Did them in a canter.

We were lucky Draper dropped those easy marks in the goal square for them. Plus lucky we didn't get him as I believe we were chasing him last year at one stage.

It was almost a mirror of a team previously coached by Allan Richardson.

My younger brother supports the Bombers and he said exactly that: "they looked liked they were coached by Alan Richardson, got plenty of ball but didn't dare to take the game on, just focused on possession which is boring and doesn't win games". Nor is he enamoured with the Bombers coaches succession plan and even less inspired by the prospects of Ben Rutten taking over in 2021.

Exactly, seems to have a bright future, it could have been brighter but stayed at Essendon.

He has a lot of talent, but is very raw still. It would have been great to have him to develop to come on after Paddy retires.

A Marshall/Draper ruck forward duo could well have been fantastic combination for many years going forward.

We have a couple of kids anyway. Paddy is teaching them now.

I would be more hopeful of our Jack than our Sam. Though our Sam is a late starter after first really chasing basketball.

I know from a St Kilda point of view we want Essendon to beat Richmond tonight but I say stuff it. I hope they get beaten by 100

Essendon playing the boundary hugging keepings off makes perfect sense. They were outgunned on paper and had just watched Geelong beat us into a pulp with a lot of that kind of keepings off, tempo thing (but mixed in with some pressure footy too).

Didn't work for them. Fortunately. (although they did win the second half)

You're quite brilliant Shane, yeah..terrific!
