45 degree kick

Post: # 1889047Post Gershwin »

What is the 45 degree kick and why is it easier with the new man on the mark rule? Honest question.

they can kick left or right of the man on the mark and he can't move to smother it, which can make it a flat arc making less likely to intercepted (if accurate)

All I know is that the new man on the mark will be an absolute disaster

The consequences of stepping sideways one foot off the mark (50m pen) far outweighs the actual indiscretion which has minimal effect on the game

Not to mention the consistentcy or inconsistency in applying the rule within the umpiring group

It will go down as one of the more braindead rule changes they have made in recent times

Exactly what the OP says

It will allow an indefensible inboard kick giving attacking teams the corridor

But yes, agreed stupid rule

How many kicks are ever smothered by the player on the mark going sideways off the mark when the player with ball hasnt played on?

Usually the player kicking sideways is back from the mark anyway and can kick to the corridor without issue

The rule they should bring in is the team with the ball not being allowed to interfere with the player on the mark - ie standing next to him to block so the player with the ball can run around the mark

The people on the rules committee need to make changes each year to justify their roles

If there were no rule changes each year for five years running, the AFL would probably sack everyone and they 'd all be out of a job

Yes, OK. Can probably just take a step or 2 back and then go sideways and be able to avoid a smother.

I have often thought that the one thing Aussie Rules needs, it’s more major penalties for minor indiscretions that don’t really impact play and will be adjudicated inconsistently

Can defenders form a wall like soccer, except in an arc?

Have seen defending players in soccer recently lie down behind the wall to stop the carpet burner kick going under the jumping wall

One can just imagine the tricks guys with the ball will employ to get the guys on the mark to flinch.

The game will devolve to one of tit for tat 50 m penalties.

Why not just have a 50 m penalty goal shootout and be done with the game.

The ump was too busy watching the guy on the mark rather calling play on when the guy with the ball moved sideways off his line ...... and of course the player on the mark moving 2 steps sideways did not effect the play at all given the player with the ball was 8m back

Just an absolute horrific rule change ...... and as if the umpires don't have enough to adjudicate on

this is going to the the issue with the rule. When has the guy played on? How far off the line before calling play on? I guess the guy on the mark has to stay put until he heard the play on call... but when does that come? How do you watch both players simultaneously?

A dumb rule, but let’s just find a way to exploit it better than anyone else.

Perhaps it has a silver lining. Players will have to block area right and left of the ‘stone man’ stuck on the mark. This will free up congestion downfield.

Remember they are worried about low scoring and are constantly trying to find ways to loosen up play.

Fewer collisions too.

Over thinking? I would guess so..

The rule has been introduced for this season.

If I were Ratts I would be training hard not to give away any 50M penalties.

And hope we get a couple of goals a game for the first third of the year from teams who have not trained for it.

If the rule creates a more attacking style of game with more scoring or scoring potential then isn't that a good thing.

That's the most ridiculous rule I have ever seen. How far back off the mark can the next player be? 5 metres? 10? Unless the guy is shooting for goal then the player on the mark should maybe stay back 5 metres so he can move in an arc if required.

This rule also means that you can't run up to the mark when the other team is shooting for goal thereby putting the guy off. What a crock of s***.

Equally important to watch the player with the footy so the umpires need to make their own rule here. One umpire closest to the ball carrier must watch him and another ump watches the guy on the mark.

I watched it again and Devilhead is right. The guy with ball moved off his line. Perhaps if the umpires did their job properly the rule change wouldn’t be necessary. If a bloke goes off his line, just blow the whistle and call play on and the play continues.

If the AFL and the broadcast partners want to encourage a fast flowing game they’ve certainly stuffed up with this. It makes our game too much like rugby and the NFL with too many stoppages.

Are needless 50m penalties an attacking style of game?
