A rare and very funny appearance by the great Carl Ditterich

Post: # 1892342Post roskilde »

He's hilarious.

Also a nice cameo by Nathan Burke and his AFLW playing daughter.

This was my father's belief
And this is also mine:

And the grapes be all one vine,
Ere our children's teeth are set on edge
By bitter bread and wine.

yeah watched it as well
good with the two old warriors and their respective daughters
The interview with Carl "elbows" Ditterich was interesting - Im sure as a kid I got his footy card and signature at some time
It seemed he got more more lubricated as the interview went on and the subject of the court defamation case with EFC was touched on. As well as the reason he left and went to Melbourne
Mentioned that the old "66 boys still stay in touch mostly through Ross Smith holding the communication lines open
A CLASS act was the little number 3

Just as raw and unpredictable as he was as a player!

Has a presence, you can tell people are intimidated by him!

I turned it on at the end of the Burkey and Browny interview with their daughters. Gee they seemed like nice kids. Big Carl interview I found fascinating. As a supporter of the Saints only in the last 25 years I didn't know much about him, save for the elbows at the head when he was Captain coach of the Dees in the early 80's. Videos show a bloke who seemed intent on just belting blokes. The highlights on The Front Bar showed an incredibly gifted athlete with some amazing skill which was great to see. Also gave an insight to the era of the day in that the big blokes had to protect the small fellas as it could get pretty willing out there. The interview withy a 17yr old Carl was interesting also. Basically indicating that he had that innate aggression from the outset, even as a kid, despite looking like a street model for Myer.

I was at the junction oval for his first game. Pure magic. A 17 year old playing his first game BOG and Ian drake couldn't wipe the smile off his face.

As a small child I was in awe of him, hence my username. He’s still an impressive figure today. Enjoyed this interview.

58 years after his debut people overlook the fact that Alan Morrow took 20 marks in that match. Carl was definitely second best on the ground. I wonder what the Brownlow votes were that day?

Great to see the big fella, notably reclusive, candidly open up about his career. Can no longer call him "the blonde bombshell" any more though.

Great bloke.

Nah, from my memory Carl was easily best on the ground and acknowkedged as such.

Sorry but I was sitting next to Drake in the committee area and helping him with stats.

It has been a long time since I have seen Carl interviewed and he was definitely good for a cackle or three. :D

Carl was a joy to watch even if it just on the Saturday night replays. A champion player.

Fair enough, you've got a decade on me. Everybody around me (I was standing near the fence) seemed to be asking who is the big blonde kid. Very little hype before the game, plenty after it. It was great to hear Carl talk about his second game (Carlton) because even I can remember how Big Nick bought him back to earth.

I can still remember Carl's debut game in 1963 at the Junction oval against Melbourne. Outstanding! But I came away from the game extremely impressed by another player making his debut -Ian Stewart.

Two other impressive first games that day by Bob Murray (his first 4 kicks on debut were goals) and Jim Wallis, who's promising career was tragically cut short by injury.

You should consider doing a long post of your own with some of these memories, saynta. This is all long before my time but its fascinating to hear about.
