Is there any chance the umps could actually practise calling 15 metre passes at training and then getting feedback till they show they have some vague comprehension of the true distance?

Always from the kick...Otherwise you could kick backwards 10m if you're 5m back from the mark.
Agree with the OP about umps getting it right.

This rule drives me insane - the umpires have no idea of distance - same as when someone stands on the mark - the ump calls out back 2 metres - the player takes half a step back and all ok. I can remember Sam Gilbert getting penalised when the umpire didn't even call his name for not going back but no one else.They might as well scrap the requirement to kick 15 metres.
