Paddy goes *WHACK* D’oh!

Post: # 1947279Post Sainternist »

I’d take 1 week for that bump, so the big guy is back got the game against GWS.

Surely, he won’t get more than a week, right?

Shouldn't get anything because as we now know, from Clarke getting his jaw broken last season, if your intent isn't to injure the player without the ball, and if both feet don't leave the ground, it is play on.

If Paddy is pinged, we sure have got some good Hunter vision to play in the big man’s defense

Pbly comes down to how badly the Hawthorn player was hurt.
Wasn’t exactly a vicious bump… was barely moving by the end and it looked to me like the Hawk’s head swung forward. If he wasn’t hurt, I’d have said the free was enough

Day was subbed for concussion which means he automatically misses the next 12 days - the St Kilda fan in me says that Paddy will do the same

Paddy pulled out & just braced for inevitable contact but hey Hunter gets his jaw smashed & no case to answer. Lets just wait & see how consistent the AFL's judicial system actually is. I have no faith in the process so probably a week & maybe 2 we are St.Kilda

Day deserves a week for stupidity. I mean how moronic to run headfirst into a brick wall like that.

If Paddy didn’t brace for the impact of that gangly uncoordinated twit running into him, he could have been injured.

If Paddy was bumping, his body weight would have been over or beyond his leg to carry forward his momentum. Instead you can clearly see it angled and braced to arrest his momentum, which brought him to a stop before the impact.

how many weeks was Clarke out when he got his jaw broken? How many weeks was the Crow given? Nationwide rally to protect the bump coming right up.

The rules have changed since last season, they’ve been made stricter, the Clark bump will now get weeks.

Hopefully they have vision of the bump making contact with the shoulder and not the chin, otherwise he might be in trouble.

So once again a precedent is set after an issue involving a St Kilda player whereby the opposition got away scot free or the Saints were made an example of

Question I’d be asking them is this: Is a player allowed to stand his ground? That’s all I see Paddy doing

There’s no point comparing this to the Clark broken jaw. The two players were going for the ball on that occasion.

This time the ball was gone.

However. Day has changed direction after he kicked the ball. If he keeps running in the direction he was going when he kicked it there would be little or no contact.

...from what I've heard now, even if Paddy made absolutely no contact with the player's head, if that player drops and gets concussion, Paddy is in the book for a concussion hit and will get time.

My source is Luke Darcy. Many of us probably heard him say it post match too.

Will unfortunately bumped into a stationary player.

Why is it Paddy’s fault if Will has a skinny long neck and he’s chosen to play a contact sport

If Will Day wanted to play NRL they’d laugh at him

I looked at the down the ground vision and slowed it up

Paddy does not make ANY contact with Will’s head.

Will suffers whiplash purely because of his physique. He has a long skinny neck and weak upper body strength

If Paddy gets pinged for that and gets a week you would have to wonder what sort of a show the AFL is running now.

You can't stand your ground (elbows down), and brace for contact. Can you bump at all? Might contact the head.
You can't step on the wrong blade of grass, 50 m penalty
You can't step off the right blade of grass, 50m penalty
You can't show a bit of passion and remonstrate with the umpire, 50m penalty
You can't under extreme pressure desperately hack a kick out from defence, bounces the wrong way, OOB, free kick.
etc etc

Too many nit picking rules, very hard for umpires.

Have to be careful the game doesn't turn a robotron race.

More evidence that Garry Lyon is a bit of a goose (if any more were needed).

https://www.sen.com.au/news/2022/04/10/ ... a1ccaad8b5

That said, I think we need to prepare ourselves for Paddy being suspended for at least a week.

FWIW, looking at it again, I think that Paddy's bump was perfectly ok: he hit Day in the chest. The problem was that Day's head then made contact with the top of Paddy's shoulder: and perhaps there was a bit of whiplash too, but I suspecct that's been overrated.

Unfortunately, the way the rules are now written, they are open to an interpretation that any aggressive contact of this type which leads to a concussion is a serious offence. They were changed this way in part in response to the Hunter Clark incident last year, so we can't really complain. Ryder will no doubt argue that he was mainly standing his ground, but he did actually take a couple of steps towards Day, and that will probably be enough to damn him.

So - hypothetically

Lions and the Saints are competing for top 4 - Round 22 - Lions have Melb in Rnd 23 - St Kilda has Swans.

We send Kent is playing but having a stinker and is going to be dropped for the last match - Ratts send him out to run into Lachie Neale - and oops Kent gets concussed - cannot play next week - but neither can Neale.

Neale loses the chance at a Brownlow - Brisbane loses a playmaker against Melb - St Kilda loses Kent for the Swans game - St Kilda wins - Melb loses - We take 4th on the ladder and get the 2nd chance - Brisbane is out in straights after losing Week 1 of the finals
