What are Gold Coast’s vulnerabilities?

Post: # 1948214Post shanegrambeau »

….their weaknesses?

I want to stop this notion in my mind that they are all of a sudden a balanced team.

Please give me reason to believe they have gaping holes.

I am hoping we are getting to the stage that we plan for our strengths as opposed to the opposition weakness - we are trying to build a team that others fear.

OK
But then, they suddenly could start to..

I need to hear things like..

Leaky defense
Unfit
Over rely on x, y z
Can’t stop a run on
Lack run
Lack height

Last week Witts had a good game - could be concern if we can't get centre clearances

Lachie Weller and Noah Anderson had over 30 possessions - Weller 80% eff - Noah - 45%

If we turn up to play it will be their headache to try and quell us

In 2020, it was the game that burst our bubble.
We still won, but it was shaky and we got absolutely spanked the following week.

We’ve got a history of close wins, but that ain’t anything to rely on. Remember we got Melbourne so many times..and Joey’s cheeky bounce+kick, which is of course a gem of a meme.

Ratts isn’t exactly lookin’ like an ad for the heart foundation, but the GC size may be a factor, forcing him to coach from the bench. The GC coach likes to take a wee-wee on the grass, so that could be a problem. Splashes on the white board?

OK ..I need more. Gold Coast usually collapse after Round Five, but not before.

They beat West Coast, but WC are crap due due to protocols.

They're a team with a lot of front runners- get in front of them and it's all over

I watched the Suns V Carlton replay the other day.
I believe Carlton was a bit flat, not completely switched on, and paid a price.
I watched the Carlton V Hawthorn game last week where Carlton was outscored for 3 quarters and was lucky to hold on at the end!
The Suns just worked harder at the contest and had a lot more run...Carlton runners all had fairly ordinary games.
The Suns have some good young mids, Sam Collins a very underrated key back, Chol & Casboult dangerous in the air up forward.
If we can at least break even in the midfield we should have too many weapons up forward.
They'll miss Lukoscious precise kicking and Ben King's class and presence.

This is a big game for us: if we win, and the other results go as one might expect, we could be 8 points clear of ninth place at the end of the round, which would be a great place to be.

The Suns went well against Carlton, but we can perhaps take some comfort from the fact that the Blues without Cripps are only half the side they otherwise are.

The clearances are going to be our biggest concern, with Witts almost certain to dominate in the ruck. I guess Lade is as well equipped as anyone to come up with some good tactics for assisting Marshall and Hayes to neutralise Witts's height advantage: I hope he has perhaps sought some additional advice from one of our esteemed board members, who I recall once doing remarkably well against Sandilands, despite the latter standing a full 22cm taller than him.

The key to our winning is the same as in the last three games: our team defence needs to get on top of the Gold Coast's attack. I expect the Gold Coast to come out guns blazing, and we shouldn't panic if they build up a lead on us in the first half: we seem to take a while to work out how to tighten the screws on our opponents, but this season we've tended to do it better and better as the game goes on. And, once we get on top in defence, we are more than enough of a threat on the rebound to mean that we aren't going to be stopped by a lopsided count in the clearances.

Given the importance of rebounding, Webster is almost more of a loss than Paddy. To me, Higgins coming in up front and, presumably, Long and Hill both playing further back is a bit of a roll of the dice. We don't really have any better options for replacing Webster, and Hill returning to half back could work out really well now that he appears to be getting back into something like his best form. But if Hill, as he is wont to do, has several attacks of the fumbles, and, as he is equally wont to do, Long gives away a few frees in dangerous spots, the wheels could come off a bit. If things get tough, perhaps Wood could be played a little further back than he usually plays.

Anyway, it's going to be an interesting game, which unfortunately I won't be able to watch live due to other commitments. So I hope I'll be able to read lots of informative stuff about it on SS.

They haven't beaten St.Kilda in 6 matches. Whatever the pregame speculation was about, they are just not in our league. That is now confirmed and we have plenty of skill and pace not actually on the field yet and another couple of red hot youngsters finding their way to contention for selection this year.

The Sun's are very fit. They run really hard but just lack a couple of hard nuts. We pressured them to turn the ball over.
