Training today 5/5/22

Post: # 1952754Post longtimesaint »

At training today and a pretty good session with nearly everyone there.
The following reports
Roma was moving well and looks certain to play
Bytel had knee strapped but still joined in full training.
Gresh apparently has a sore hip and was largely running laps and having a very light session.Spoke to one of the trainers and they expect him to be ok by Sunday.
King and Higgins still had the yips at goal kicking. Incidentally Sharman was dobbing goals with ease
Jones and Billings in full training and looking good.
Only players missing were the long term injuries in Coffield, Hannebery and Hayes.
The guy I talked to went up to Cairns and said the state of the ground was terrible, especially after heavy rain a few days earlier and then they played a curtain raiser!
He also said the humidity was really high and the running players lost about 3 kilos weight during the match.

Thanks for posting. Good report. Very few of us attend training, so it's good to hear what has occurred.

I can't understand why King & Higgins are going backwards with their goal kicking, which should be a set routine - getting to be a real team concern now.

That's why we have coaches

Slightly disagree here. Max spent a lot of time goal kicking. Still there well after the players left. Worked on kicking 50m every time- even from the goal square

That ought to make sure he kicks through every ball. Very good training drill imo. Now for the hard part. Transferring that to a match situation.

Tony can you shed light on Cooper Sharman's year so far
Did he not have a very good preseason, has he been carrying an injury?
He doesn't seem to be anywhere near selection.

As an armchair expert with no elite football experience this seems exactly what he needs.
He looks great 40-50 out as he kicks through it then stabs and pokes at it 20mt out.
He's such a nice field kick other than mental and tensing up there doesn't seem to be a rational explanation for why he misses easy shots for a player of his ability.

Wood wore a white jumper but that’s normal, as this has been the case pretty much all season so far.

The guy I talked to went up to Cairns and said the state of the ground was terrible, especially after heavy rain a few days earlier and then they played a curtain raiser!
He also said the humidity was really high and the running players lost about 3 kilos weight during the match.
Question to the AFL how are we supposed to recover from losing 3 kilos in a game in a week.
We are seriously handicapped this week.

The 3kg loss is interesting, and seems very broad.
What is the normal weight loss for a mid running 14-16 klm a match?

What does this look like against the 3kg?
Did they lose an extra 1kg in Cairns or more?
Is that a good or bad thing from conditioning perspective?

A high carb & protein diet and appropriate supplements (not Essendon style) would arrest this very quickly.

Losing 3 kilos is equivalent to what a marathon runner loses in a race and you don't see them backing up a week later to run another one.
If Port perform badly tonight, I would be very worried and both clubs should blast the AFL for scheduling the Cairns match without a bye the following week.

It's just water-weight, they're young elite athletes, they'll be fine.

Combat athletes can cut 15% of their bodyweight before a fight then rehydrate overnight and perform at extremely high levels.

We need to stop being so precious and going into this game with a victim mentality and a ready-made excuse.

Marathon runners tend to lose about 5% body weight.
Also professional marathon runners are among the leanest professional athletes weighing on average in the low 70kg range.

AFL mids like Ross, Steel, Crouch would be on average 85-88kg?
The equivalent loss to a marathon runner would be 4-5kg.

The critical number is not the weight loss but the difference between normal weight loss and the Cairns effect.
Given 8 days to recover I doubt it will be overly significant.

Port are playing tonight, while we have a two day break on them.
Imagine the outcry on here around the AFL conspiracy and mistreatment if we were playing tonight like PA?

I've lost 3kg a few times after doing strenous work in hot conditions. It's all fluid.

You get it back quickly.

The top soccer players have long had to deal with this problem at World Cup finals which, ridiculously, tend to be played at the hottest time of the year to avoid clashes with club competitions. (Except, of course, in the case of the corruptly-awarded finals this year in Qatar, which were based on the ludicrous proposition that the grounds could be sufficiently air-conditioned to enable the games to proceed in 50 degree heat and, when that house of cards inevitably collapsed, were moved to what passes for winter in the Gulf region.)

The conditioning staff used by top level soccer teams - who are pretty much the world's best - have developed techniques for dealing with backing up after playing intensely in hot and humid conditions. I'm sure our club has a good understanding of what works and what doesn't.

At least our players don't have to back up in the heat: Sunday's forecast is for a maximum of 16 degrees! And, unlike a trip to Perth, there is no change of time zone to deal with: which, ridiculous as it seems, demonstrably has some sort of an effect on performance.

We'll see how Port go tonight against a Bulldogs team missing its V8 engine in the Bont. I don't like making too many predictions, but I reckon they'll go ok. Both Port and St Kilda will need to focus on defending well in the first quarter while they struggle to shake off the effects of Cairns, and then try to pile on a lead in the second and third quarters before they inevitably run out of puff during the fourth. This can work, although I'd far rather we were playing the Dogs without the Bont and Port were taking on the Dees!

The problem with the tournament comparison is that after a team plays a game in heat they recover and have to back up to a game against another team that had to play in the same conditions.
It is a whole different situation when only one side has had the difficult preparation.
A night game in Cairns is a completely different proposition to a game at the MCG.
Any thought that this doesn't disadvantage us is simply wrong, it doesn't however mean we will inevitably lose as there are many other factors involved.

But soccer tournaments played at the height of summer feature a mixture of day and night fixtures, which also creates an imbalance. i think our team will overcome this obstacle and give an excellent account of themselves on Sunday.

However, i think a loss is all but inevitable. The current Melbourne lineup has an ability to shift gears which will almost certainly allow them to pull away from us at some point.

Thanks LoveYouLongTime. We love these training reports. Keep em coming.

I am absolutely incensed that we lost to a team that did not have to play in the same conditions.

An AFL conspiracy.

Again, I will be watching tonight's game with interest to see how Port has pulled up.
If Port look flat and run out of legs early it doesn't bode well for us.

Port seem to have done okay going by the scores.
