Saints won more games than any other team between 2004-6.
I like GT. I think he was a great coach. I was very upset when he was sacked.

I disagree and so do ex assistant coaches who knew and told me “he **** your club”
I think his ego cost us flags with that list
How would they have gone with Lyon in charge …
Couldn’t move Grant on though ….even though he was meant to be caretaker????
Egotist

He is one of only two St Kilda coaches who coached the Saints to win more games over several seasons than any other team (2004-6).
Jeansie also did this between 1965-73.

Mate I couldn’t give a fat rats clacker about his 10 win “the streak” dvd
We had the best list of our modern era in his care and he failed to get us into 1 GF ….not 1???????
Playing injured players in the prelim …
Under investing in player health and rehab was a debacle he sat across with his cr@p “training services” bullshyte (what a corporate wank@)
He RAN the joint and no players talk about their love for GT like they do Lyon????
I would’ve respected him more had he done what he said early days he was going to do - caretaker coach while we hunted an experienced AFL option
He got in the chair and never had any interest in leaving and had to be sacked to get him out the door
Not before he reached his fat hands into the clubs limited coffers and took wads of cash with him…
Utter cretin
He can’t snipe Lyon and he knows he’s not a pimple on his ass as coach

GT was unquestionably a good coach

Took a bunch of talented kids in 2002

To prelim finals in 04 & 05 and a final in 06

If not for key injuries history would be different

BTW
Ask his players what they think of GT

He had his flaws. I think he was probably the right coach for us at the time.

I wouldn’t say the alternative candidate in around 2001 was any better.

Spot on. Well said.
Some people may not like a Thomas but he could definitely coach and players really played for him.

GT describes his teams as not quite ready in 04, 05 & 06???

For most of the players

04 was the first finals series they’d played in

So yeah

Not ready

Sometimes it takes years of finals experience to handle the big day

We didn’t do it in 09/10

Spot on great post
Of course Grant will tell anyone he paved the way for Ross lol
Facts are Thomas had the best Saints list of modern times and blew it
Good coach??? I thought coaches didn’t do much .,
But even if they do….shoot out Grant had 1 style and when that hit shut down (like Ratten) his teams were picked apart
Anyway he’s old news so who cares

And you’d be wrong as most sensible pundits know the mix of up and coming top draft talent and prime age stars was never better in Thomas years
No Robert Eddys Clint Jones or Mqualters getting round in 04-06 and Ball was AA not a broken down hobbit who couldn’t kick over a jam Tim
GT blew it

Plenty of non-super stars on that list and broken down players isn’t an argument either…

The majority of the young guns of the 04 era would get absolutely curb stomped by the seasoned versions of themselves they went on to be.

Not all by any means and obviously the GT had the bigger super stars with G Train and Harves being the biggest…

But there are gaps. The 09-11 team is complete with stars across every level

Take what’s on DB’s list… make it better with say the exception of Kosi, Ball and a few others… add Schneider, Dempster, Gardiner, King, Armitage, Steven (over the journey), Lovett (for a cup of coffee), Dawson, Jones (who you’ve added as a plodder!?)… way better depth

Easily the strongest saints list ever assembled.

On a side note… we obviously know most of the story with Lovett and what happened.

But I’m actually interested to know… who actually pushed for him to be sacked?

I really can’t imagine that would have been a RTB deal… I imagine that he would/could have kept his personal feelings intact long enough to get on with going for the flag…
Don’t ask me why I have this impression but I’ve always thought there was a bit of a sense of the players, especially those that knew the victim as demanding/pushing for it.

Anyone got any insight on this?
