RTB on SEN this morning

Post: # 2014410Post st sandy »

Do yourself a favour & listen to Ross Lyon on SEN this morning
Currently on the SEN website on the breakfast show - Ross talks for 16 minutes
Ross is relaxed, humourous, steeping back with balance - bit of puff piece, exploration & learning

www.sen.com.au/programs/sen-breakfast/

As a St Kilda supporter I continue to grow levels of calmness about my team & the club & the future prospects/identity with RTB leadership

In my 50's - i cannot remember the last time i experienced this emotion

Can't believe we are sitting 5th with all the injuries we've had and the list we have. Knocking on the top 4. Brisbane are on the ropes and if we're good enough we'll displace them. A real credit to Ross and the whole club.

In fact, the players have got a real opportunity to go deep this year whilst the public have no expectation and no pressure on us. This year is a free hit. This year could be our equivalent of 2004/2005. We aren't ready for the big dance yet but wouldn't it be good for the players to experience a prelim final?

Just wait until Ross has a chance to do an off-season clean-out of players that don't fit his mould. Plus we will attract better talent from other clubs over the next 2 years.

In the meantime, just keep pumping games into these guys who are all in the best 22:

Phillipou - 18 years old
Caminiti, Owens - 19 years old.
Nasiah W-M , Windhager - 20 years old.
King - 22 years old.
Stocker, Coffield - 23 years old.
Battle, H Clark - 24 years old.

Give these young guys another 2 years of development and anything could happen in 2026.

These guys are also young'ish but I'm not convinced that they will be in our best 22 when we have a stronger list, I think they'll become depth: Byrnes (22 yrs), Paton (24 yrs), Higgins (24 yrs).

It was a fairy floss chat.

Ross the Boss comes in for some dental floss and back massage.

Why didn't they ask him some interesting questions?

Hey RTB: Your midfield is basically a bunch of 29 year-old alsorans. Whaddaya say to get them fired up? How does it affect strategy? What players would you like to get? etc.

You're quite brilliant Shane, yeah..terrific!

Much appreciated
It’s just good listening to a coach who doesn’t live in cliched rubbish aka Voss or Ratten
Just tells you where we lost or won the game

I love Ross

But what was insightful and non-cliched about that?

This is a side which sat at 8 wins and 3 losses after 11 games in 2022

Then, to quote Lyon, they endured injuries to key players and lost confidence

Yes, we look for support for Marshall and Howard (noting there are prospects developing at Sandringham)

Caminiti has provided support for King, which was another requirement

We have seen the development of Wanganeen-Milera and Owens which has added to our depth - and we trust Windhager and some at Sandringham join them

There is not much respect on here for the work of Rattan and Gallagher - but they had us at 8-3 last year pending injuries Lyon has referred to

The List has potential and the programme of filling the absent age demographic (where only Wilkie now remains, Hind at Essendon) then investing in the Draft and selective recruiting whilst retaining Draft Picks has worked

There is still a depth issue along with support for Marshall and Howard the reason being that only the insurance policies of Campbell and Cordy represent experience at Sandringham

So if Howard goes down probably Adams is first cab off the rank as a like for like

And over and above Campbell, Heath in the ruck

So still danger areas but going in the right direction - a direction set by Gallagher and Rattan

Some truth in that Killa
Think Gallagher wasn’t terrible but his imports haven’t been awesome either

I think Gallagher leaving was a big loss. Better than average strike rate for a list manager. Much prefer him to Silvagni.

Ratts had a tough gig and seemed to run out of steam, like the players, couldn't arrest the slide, could anyone have?
Appointment of Ross was to build on Ratts work like Killa has observed. Really there had to be change, didn't there. Nothing personal, more changing circumstances.
Gallagher seemed a huge improvement on previous; very astute and with a difficult hand to play. Wilkie outstanding choice, Hayes looked similar until fate intervened. Was in the chair when Owens, Winhager and Nasiah arrived. I think.
His choice to go back to Adelaide. Although there seemed personal tension with new "pillars" ?
SOS has started well hasn't he. Stocker and Caminiti good gets from inside knowledge. Seemed he assembled a very good side for Voss, seemed to have an excellent spine FF to FB. VG mids. Hard to understand what's gone wrong. Couple of Colman contenders and Brownlow winner ?

With all due respect, Ratts lost most. He now has the easiest job in the world as a caretaker coach. Okay, I’m exaggerating.

I think Ross is a very good coach

Not a god as some believe- he’s never actually triumphed

But I also think coaches have far less effect than fans think - especially those fans who have never had a kick.

In the first instance you have to have the players (and available players so luck with injuries plays its part)

BM who was the best coach you played for. Was he primarily a motivator or tactician, if you are ok with me asking.
