Brownlow. Did the Umps get it Right?

Post: # 2032613Post StPeter »

Neale ,the winner didn't even make All Australian.

Jack Steele won 3 BOG votes and three 2nd best votes. I don't think many Saints fans saw that!

Sinclair, although polling well with 21 votes from 10 games, did not receive a vote round v GWS although having 37 disposals, 733 metres gained and two goals (uniformly given BOG by every media outlet).

Plenty of other anomalies but will leave it at that.

Not much love for Rowan Marshall and our All Australian Callum Wilke.

Errol Gulden a bit stiff not to get 3 votes in the final round with 42 classy possessions.

Personally I wouldn't have Neale in my All Australian team either.

Rohan Marshall, 3 x 1 vote games,
Callum Wilkie 1 x 2 vote game,
Mason Wood 1 vote,
Michito Owens zero votes.

I must have been watching a different team all year.

And the winner got 3 votes for a seven-kick game.

Says it all really. Time to take the responsibility for voting off the FOUR umpires and get their guide dogs do the voting.

I believe the absolute media saturation, coupled with instant celebrity of media faves, ingrains umpires' psyche and has them watching for those players. A sham.

It's BS.

How did Gulden not get bog in Round 24? Petracca won them the game. He had exactly the same disposals as Viney. No votes. Cost me big time in my trifectas and pick 4

Umpires alone shouldn't be voting. They need a panel. Coaches should vote along with umps and 1 of the Foxtel or channel 7 commentators. Cameron Ling and Luke Darcy are not allowed to be involved due to fwit factor

Should be renamed the Midfielder's Medal

Was that the game against GWS where Charlie Cameron kicked 7 goals?

More than ever, thr Brownlow is a contest favouring possession accumulators in the midfield or on the half back line. KPPs, especially rucks (at least this year) need not apply.

A contest in which Jack Viney finishes ahead of Toby Greene and Tim Taranto and Brad Crouch finish ahead of Charlie Curnow is a contest I can’t take at all seriously.

Brad Crouch 18 Brownlow Votes!

2 more than Grand Finalists Jordan De Goey and Pendlebury combined.

Good Brownlow value is Brad Crouch!

Feels strange!

Biggest midfield profile medal
Daicos will win 3 while Hamish is unzipping him…

Interesting to compare the winner's year (playing mid-field) with that of Sinclair- averages per games played.

Fantasy points Sinc 102.1 (elite); Neale 95 (abv av)

Disposals Sinc 28.9 (elite); Neale 26.9 (abv av)

Kicks Sinc 19.6 (elite); Neale 12.1 (abv av)

Handballs Sinc 9.3 (elite); Neale 14.8 (abv av)

Effective kicks Sinc 14.3 (Elite); 7.6 Neale (abv av)

How many kick-ins (after the opposition score a behind) does Lachie Neale get each game - on average?

Or... Bontempelli or Jack Steele for that matter?

You've also omitted two other stats. Contested vs Non contested is important. Tackles are also important.

Sinclair doesn't usually have high tackle numbers.

It seems from some of the voting in various games (e.g Viney vs Petracca...or Steele vs Sinclair) that umpires - and coaches - value tackles. Makes sense that tackles get noticed by an ump because they hold up play and give a free kick to reward the tackler.

I've never understood why the Brownlow holds any prestige. Umps should also just be there to enforce the rules, not decide which players are best.

Last year it was joked on here that Windhager’s effort on Neale cost him the Brownlow .

Was he on him in the last game (I can't remember)? Might have cost him again if he was (the whole match).

Voted by the men & women who every week demonstrate incompetence & petty vindictiveness.
Neale is a class act but not better/ more valuable than Harris Andrews who is essential for BNE.
Another vector for betting, that's all.

Poor Hamish. Overly gushy and tongue tied even by AFL mc standards. Amateur hour.

I think the Brownlow now is more about whoever is running past the umpire enough times with the ball, or disposing of it a lot in the umpire's vision, not so much the effect a player is having on the actual game. Neale is a great player though.

Every year we hear the same complaints.

We have to remember that the Brownlow Medal is the umpires award. Always has been. Always should be.

It's not like we don't have a multitude of other awards.
We have:
  • All Australian - Awarded based on position by a panel of "experts"
  • Player MVP - Awarded by the players
  • Coaches MVP - Awarded by the coaches
  • A plethora of media awards from all the major papers and radio broadcasters
  • And, lastly, the club B&F awards
If we don't like the Brownlow result, then why not elevate some of the others above it, or reduce the importance of the the Brownlow?

Oh, and one more thing...All the individual league awards, no matter who votes on them, are won by midfielders!

As LLS said above, there are plenty of awards to choose from if you don’t like one. Each has its flaws, supporters will always find something about each to whinge about.

It’s always been a midfielders award, tho I’d have Bont and Petracca ahead of Neale.

IMO make the AFL awards night the big one, make the AFLCA votes silent throughout the year.

Just have to keep Bont and Danger away from the mic.

It probably needs a revamp though as it’s beginning to lose its prestige.

Times have changed and the game is now very quick. The umpires already have plenty to do.

AFL changes the rules all the time. This award looks like it needs some reform.
