Trade Week +StKFC = Difficult Times

Post: # 2034054Post damienc »

I’m going to make some observations about trade week and our footy club.

Now, I don’t want to sound too critical because most of us are not privy to what is happening behind the scenes.

But I will make these observations:

1. none of our trades are ever quick or smooth. Other AFL clubs seem to never encounter the difficulties we face in getting players in or out. Or if they do it’s resolved pretty quickly. Ours always drag on and on and on.
2. Essendon are a nightmare club to deal with. In my opinion the absolute worst in the AFL. Maybe it will be different after Dodoro leaves. Every deal we’ve tried to do with them becomes a major drama. I understand each club must look after it’s own interests but if a player clearly signals they want to play for another footy club then all parties, in my view and in the spirit of goodwill should do everything they can to make it happen.
Maybe when one deal goes through everything else falls into place.

It just seems like every year we go to the wire to get our deals done.

I know it sounds like a criticism but really it’s more of an observation.

Trade week goes too long. Simple as that. Open trades Friday finalise by Wednesday.

This bulls*** is for the media, who usually start trade week in August.

It seems as though if the Saints don't fold to the other clubs demands then the trades drag on, somehow or other clubs think we should
just honour their ambit demands.

Geelong aren't easy to deal with either, fancy them knocking back pick 24 for Esava.
The Cats want Ollie Lord instead of a pick.

The trade mantra at St Kilda is - trade in high and trade out when players are worth nothing.

You'd hate them to be running a super fund.

As ex-president Peter Summers said:
“If we are going to be a contender, we may as well plan to win the bloody thing.”

Would people feel better if we traded Sinclair, Wilkie and Marshall for second round draft picks?

The reality is clubs try to hold on to players who have impressed and are prepared to trade players who haven’t.

What did we give up for Stocker(19), Steele (24), Jones (15]?

One of the major reasons our trades don't go well or smoothly is that for years, we've traded away our future 2nd round pick. Which is where you get all your value - either in a trade or pick swap. And if you happen to have the 1st pick in the 2nd round (i.e. the 1st pick of night 2 of the draft) ... it's like gold
