Another excellent game from Arie yesterday for Sandringham.

32 possessions, 8 marks, and a great long goal from outside 50.

Is it time to give him a chance?

I am not sure in what position but maybe the wing while Wood is out.

I think Sharman will be lucky to hold his spot this week so another debut could be on the cards.

Arie doesn’t have the tank or speed for a wing.

He’s playing good footy but plays the role of Battle or Wilkie, two of our better and more durable players.

Unless he replaces Sharman, in that forward/ back hybrid (nothing) role I don’t see it.

I would love to see him get a run and bang a couple of 70mt bombs.

He's playing quite well. He has some things to work on, in particular his tackling (or rather his willingness to). He tends to let players get around him far too easily and then doesn't follow up with any urgency.

I think this may partly be because he doesn't have a big tank and doesn't accelerate quickly from a standing start

''

His tank can't be too bad to register well over 30 possessions twice from 3 rounds.
I can't see him breaking into our backline at present

He’s racking up midfield-like numbers, so I wouldn’t be so quick to pigeonhole him as a Battle/Wilkie type.

About his tank, I really couldn’t say, but I believe he was sent down to train with Sandi for a week or two pre-season after a poor time trial. So probably there is work to be done there yet.

But midfield-type numbers is very encouraging. I hear he was a big slider in the draft due to some disciplinary issues … but was rated by quite a few as highly talented.

Easy position to rack up numbers

Across HB

And you don’t need a huge tank to sit behind the footy and let it come to you

I think Sharman is worth perssiting with. Not sure why our most accurate kick (and a decent mark) is being played so far from goal. Would like to see Arie as well.

You don’t see Battle and Wilkie racking up those sorts of numbers though do you.

Better than not racking up, but.

With Sharman, the attraction indeed need is his 193cm - and not just for marking

We are not an overly tall side

We do have some tall youth, of whom Schoenmaker is one

I see Sharman’s future post Membrey as the 3rd forward who is a danger to oppositions including overhead

I note Keeler is playing as a defender in the VFL

These kids are being educated

Some will arrive at AFL level at first opportunity - others may take a little longer

The audit is trajectory

Sharman isn’t ordinary he’s just being asked to be an everywhere man atm and that’s a tough gig
Let him settle as a forward and he’ll do fine

The way Sharman is being used at the moment threatens to ruin him as a player. Richardson and Ratten did a similar thing to Battle, trying to turn him into a "swingman" but succeeding only in confusing him and almost wrecking his career in the process.

Fortunately, Ratten woke up in time and returned him to his rightful and natural role as a defender.

Sharman is a natural forward. Anyone with a scintilla of knowledge of the game can see it. From his first few games he showed that.

He's capable of taking big, contested marks. He also happens to be the most reliable set shot for goal in the place.

Any experimentation "disguised" as footballing education is over. He's our Breust like, versatile, 3rd tall forward. Now leave him in that role and let him flourish.

Exactly. Lyon is doing what a lot of coaches do in desperation and that's try to turn a player into what he is not to cover supposed gaps. Better off putting King in the backline and Sharman at FF.

After moving Battle into the centre bounces to add some strength, there is a possibility that Schoenmaker could replace Battle in the back line.
But St Kilda needs talls capable of silencing Naughton and Ugly Hagan to beat the Dogs.
I am not convinced by Cordy.

Arie could easily slot into Bonner's slot, if he can prove his defensive efforts are better.

Are you sure, he was absolutely blitzing Jones and Crouch when they were running together.

He ran a 6:32 3km in the draft combine too.

I think he can easily match Sharman as far as running goes.

Battle got 25 and 13 marks just two games ago

Wilkie has his hands full on guys like Jeremy Cameron and Jesse Hogan

I get that BigMart. I’m saying he’s getting a lot of possessions, so maybe a bit premature to pigeonhole him as a defender who can only come in to replace Battle or Wilkie.

He’s shaping as a ball magnet

With his leg, obviously the aim would be to get it in his hands as often as possible (a bit like we do with Nasiah and Sincs)

But remember it was only 8 weeks ago he was banished to train with Sandringham for a fortnight.

He has definite AFL attributes

And things to work on

Yes, I have noted that in previous posts. The good thing is that he appears to have the talent … the rest is up to him.

That is certainly a very impressive 3k time.
Are you sure it wasn’t over 2k?

As also pointed out by BM he was sent to Sandy in the preseason for ‘reportedly’ not being at the required fitness level.

I’d like to see him selected on a wing at Sandy first or in the back half in the senior team.

Still early days, but ( with the greatest respect to Dan McKenzie ) I am very glad the club used that last pick on Arie.
