Who would want to be a forward at the Saints when you have a C-grade midfield who either can't get the ball, or just bomb. We actually need class in the midfield.

Yes absolutely.

Delivery is a cop out for the poor showing we saw tonight and for far too long.

Can't spread the defensive structure.
Can't win a contested ball at ground level.
Can't keep it inside 50 once it gets in there.

In terms of some stats:

Bottom 4 for marks on the lead
Bottom 4 for intercept marks against
Bottom 5 for Scores per Inside 50
12th for Tackles inside 50

We have talent. It's clear that the list is developing but fine.

Talent doesn't drive effort
Talent doesn't drive basic skill errors
Talent doesn't stop you from keeping a decent structure

The moment you rely on talent, is the moment you end up like Gold Coast.

This list is well short of talent...really struggling to execute tbe basica...the Lyon "system" and "effort" model is not going to work on a significantly talentless list.

Whilst ALL coaches require effort I don't feel that that is all that Ross has to offer. Yeah we have some players in thye team that clearly aren't ready to play AFL or probably shouldn't be playing AFL, but tonights performance was unacceptable any way you look at it. Dogs just aren't that good.

You don't need "elite" talent to execute the basics.

We have a list of AFL level players, who can and do execute the basics.

Just not tonight.

We were so far off that talent wasn't going to win us a quarter, let alone th ematch.

Agree that something needs to change, but I'm not sure it's just the forward coach.

Our forwards don't mark on the lead, mostly because they don't lead.

And the main reason they don't lead is because they're up at the wrong end of the ground.

And the reason they're at the wrong end of the ground is because the RTB strategy is to recruit blokes who will run both ways.

Somehow I doubt that even Tony Locket or Tom Hawkins would get selected in a Ross Lyon team, given their propensity to play the traditional 'stay at home' forward role.

And possibly the reason we've been kicking goals later in the game is because the forwards are too knackered to run, and default to stay at home.

Regardless, plan A isn't working, so we must at least experiment with a Plan B.

Our forward coach is Rob Harvey so is this a reflection on why he didn’t get the top spot…. But it’s a combination of a mid field that shite a very tall forward who doesn’t know how to lead and is stuck with a plan of bomb it in long and hope he can mark …..all up this leads to failure. So its back to the boss the overall plan doesn’t work

Getting the jerks posing as forwards last night to actually scrape 9 goals was a terrific coaching effort. Forwards schmorwards. Bring on Max, Collard and give Sharman Membrey's spot. Maybe not play Higgins as a back pocket, he has trouble from 40 let alone 140.

Is it the forward coach though!?

Is this Harves’ structure or is he trying to make what Lyon wants work?

Initial thoughts… part of Robert Harvey’s legendary status was achieved by hitting leading forwards on the chest. That’s not what this is.

I absolutely agree with this when your game plan is to bomb the ball to the same spot every time you go forward you will never have a functioning forward line.
We cannot have a quick transition from defense to attack because Ross wants all 18 players up in their half of the ground defending grass.
When we get the ball we have to slow it down because there is often no one ahead of the ball.
So we fiddle about going wide and sideways to allow our players to stream back up the middle and form in a pack 30 out from the goal.
We then bomb to that point 30 out to create a spill and hope for either a pack mark or a small forward to shark it.
What usually happens though is that one of their HBF's get one of their 45 possessions for the game and send it back so all of our forwards tear back up the field to take up space again.
Rinse and repeat.
There is only one man that can be blamed for how our forward line operates.
Given who our coach is are we surprised that our gameplan is basically cobblers.

The forward coach should be the one working on I50 entries - presentation and demanding delivery.

Perhaps there is a breakdown in the coaching ranks.

I noticed in the coaches box against the Bullies. Harves was sitting beside Lyon. Usually it’s Boris sitting next to Lyon, when at Marvel.
