Players in question for 2025?

Post: # 2055701Post Sainternist »

Which players don’t seem to be a part of the club’s future? Hmmm there’s quite a few *sigh*

Of course, there are only so many who’ll retire or be delisted. But here are the ones that come to mind for me:

Brad Crouch - alleged knee problems

Seb Ross - I like Seb, but our midfield needs to be reinvigorated

Dougal Howard - simply not up to snuff

Zaine Cordy - he’s been serviceable, but can’t imagine him being a part of the future

Hunter Clark - this is his make or break year, but we’re still yet to get him back on the park

Jack Hayes - wasn’t his last game 2 years ago?

Zak Jones - it’s his make-or-break season and he’s simply not delivering, again

Ben Paton - hasn’t been the same player since Roughie broke his leg

Jimmy Webster - a serviceable defender, but is getting long in the tooth. His 7 match suspension in the preseason did him no favours

Am I missing anyone?

It depends what we can get in. There is still value in having guys like Seb even if he plays VFL.

4 ND picks, 1 SSP.

"only" need to delist 5.

Allison, Hotton, Campbell, Heath.

Plus one from your list. Probably Jones.

Byrnes and Sharman look more and more fringe the longer they take to prove they might be part of a potential flag side.

Also looks like Heath isn't going to make it.

Alison is already gone

Membrey is no longer the player he was and if this club is to go anywhere he along with Ross should not be part of the club's future.

These 2 haven't shown enough glimpses of potential, IMHO.

Cooper in particular seems to find the ball only rarely.
Sam Pang from The Front Bar had a nickname when he played Pies U19- 'the Orchid' as he needed perfect conditions to blossom.
That's Coops

You could tell very early on Sharman wasn't an AFL footballer, without all of the significant injuries we've had he wouldn't have played as many games as he has. Harsh but reality.

Byrnes looks like he's more of a keeper if the fringe stocks require it but otherwise he looks like he's reached his ceiling.

We're bottom 4 for Score Launches.

We're bottom 4 for goals per Inside 50's

We're bottom 4 for shots on goal per inside 50...

But yeah... it's Membrey's and Sharman's fault

Another interesting stat on wheeloratings.com/afl is the disposal efficiency team stats

St Kilda is second last for DE by foot. It's in the disposals section under 'Kick Eff %'

Surprisingly Geelong are third last  ...so I suppose that stat in isolation doesn't mean that much.

I don't know why I bothered 😭

Well Allison is gone… no questions there.

Jones appears to have run his race

Ross and Membrey are struggling for form now and age is against them both

Paton simply looks to be a shadow of his former but may be saved by the lack of a suitable replacement. Especially if Webster retires.

Dougal Howard barring a drastic reversal of form is categorically trade bait now if we could move him on. Wouldn’t be close to providing value for what we’re paying for him.

I don’t know if Tom Campbell is set to retire.

That’s 8-9 there potentially. Already too much. And that’s before looking at younger players that haven’t come on

Would free up some cash though

Skeptic makes a valid point about Dougal in terms of value for money.

Salary cap issues are vital.
Contract value was a major factor in Billings and Gresh going.
They'd been at St K for years and the $$ on the table didn't match their output and on-field presence.

Dougal was part of our esteemed backline due to his height and the fact that he and Wilkie had great tactics and partnership.
His on-field value is nowhere near what his manager thinks he's worth.
Money would be better spent on developing someone currently at Sandy or even looking around State leagues for a 199cm KPD.
Liam Jones was in and out at Brown Paper Baggers, but from what I've seen of him at the Bulldogs, he seems to be tracking just fine.

196cm+ KPD are rare as hens teeth and would be sought by quite a few clubs in the market.

Hawthorn and North definitely need one each.

Dougal is a better full back than McKay and look at how much he got.

Starting point is who is out of contract. According to footywire the below list are.

In trouble
Angus McLennan
Matthew Allison
Oli Hotton
Seb Ross
Tim Membrey
Tom Campbell
Zak Jones

question marks
Dougal Howard
Isaac Keller
Jack Hayes
James Van Es
Jimmy Webster
Max Heath

re-sign
Ben Paton NFA
Cooper Sharman NFA
Daniel Butler NFA
Josh Battle UFA
Liam Stocker UFA
Mason Wood UFA
Matthew Allison NFA
Riley Bonner UFA
Ryan Byrnes NFA

7 players to change off the list before looking at the question marks.

Howard will be cost dependent.
Keilor I'd re-sign
Hayes depends how the rest of this year goes
Van Es I couldn't comment
Webster if cheap
Heath I'd give another year.

I think Doug’s is possibly one of the safest on the list, most of the hate for him is derived from echos in the chamber rather than knowledge of his worth.

Have to be careful dumping too many taller players in one hit, where are the replacements coming from, do they exist ?

Will get worse once the football world tries to service the needs of 19 clubs, it can't do it adequately now with 18 clubs.

Saints looking like a bottom 4 team in 2024.

As a hypothetical lets say we trade in Ned Moyle and take 1 x player as an NGA rookie (Cole) and want to take 3 picks at the draft. That would mean delisting 5 players minimum -

Matt Allison (was never going to make it)
Max Heath (hasnt improved - not up to it)
Tom Campbell ( good clubman and VFL player its time to develop others)
Zak Jones (no longer in the best 23 players - injury prone)
Olli Hotton (stiff but injury prone and hasnt shown enough).

The other way to create list spots is by trading players out so perhaps Paton, Clark, Jones & others might attact some interest.

Just a few seasons back the demographics of the List saw the Club go to experienced players from the State Leagues to fill the hole between our older players and our youngsters.

To add that mid range of mature bodies and minds - knowing what footy is all about.

Hence Wilkie, Hind, Parker, Young et al

Of whom Wilkie remains.

Those players were all useful, not only on match days but also within the Club with their experience.

In terms of the current List, that experience is now supplied by Jones (from Sydney), Crouch (from Adelaide), Ross, Hill (from Hawthorn and Fremantle), Steele (from GWS), Butler (from Richmond), Hayes (from Woodville-West Torrens), Marshall, Howard (from Port Adelaide), Cordy (from Western Bulldogs), Bonner (from Port Adelaide), Membrey (from Sydney), Webster, Wood (from North Melbourne), Sinclair, Campbell (a journeyman) and Wilkie (from North Adelaide).

Noting that Sinclair and Marshall have come from the Rookie List, so only leaving Ross and Webster.

Interesting, isn't it?

So, having had the need to import what is now our core of experience, experience which the Competition instructs is vital to win Premierships, where is the future?

It could be put that, in recruiting that experience certain of those players you could assess are not at Premiership 23 status.

But, given the youth of our List, they are required for leadership at the Club.

So experienced shoulders to assist and support what we are building, with Higgins (recruited), Windhager, Collard, Wanganeen-Milera, Owens, Clark, King, Byrnes, Stocker (recruited), Dow (recruited), Keeler, Wilson, Henry (recruited), Hastie, Phillipou, Batttle, Shoenmaker, Allison, Van Es, Paton, Garcia, Hotton, McLennan, Heath, Sharman (recruited), O'Connell and Caminiti.

It may be that some of that youth will not make the grade, because that is the competition BUT, what we can look forward to, is that we have learnt from the recent past and that we have a significant number on our current List who will be the core of our experience over coming years.

And not have to scour State Leagues and the Lists of other Clubs.

So who we do recruit from elsewhere are the cream on top, not the foundations.

The quiet curse has been the career stymieing injuries to young potential key defenders.
Plus not grooming a replacement for Membrey.
The loud curse has been a pedestrian mid field and frequent changes to the wings combinations.

Why would we trade in Ned Moyle

We have an elite ruckman who needs support - ie/a forward who can play in the ruck

Ned Moyle is a C Grade ruckman
Marshall is a C Grade forward

Give up an A Grade ruckman for two C Gradeers
