Mini history of the Saints- St Kilda

Post: # 686113Post saintbrat »

in recent days it has come to light that some of the younger supporters have missed on learning some of the Vital pieces of Saints history

can we create a list of what makes " the Saints"

add ONE memory or piece of St Kilda history that you think is important.(I realise some have many pieces they could add-Maybe add One per day)

let see what we can teach them.

# St Kilda used to get players from the Ballarat area when all clubs had Zones to draft their players from- ( dates will be supplied by someone.

Who can remember the names of the players we got from our Ballarat zone?
In no pasrticular order
Danny Frawley
Tony Lockett
Greg Burns
Val Perovic
Geoff Cunningham
Darryl Cunningham (Geoff's little brother)
Gary Lofts

Maybe tomorrow we can discuss our metropolitan zone down Nepean Highway which gave us some fantastic players but was taken away from us and given to Hawthorn just before a whole heap of Football Legends started playing?

With the addition of our latest red head Lynchy perhaps people might

remember some stories of another firey red by the name of Alan Davis

Story - starting a puch up before the umps had even bounced the ball.

Launched into his opponent as soon as he arrived. Seriously agro player.

I've never seen a bad St.Kilda player - that's just how they are.

Chad was pretty tough - I remember him being stretchered off after a big

hit - but his old man was just mean.

Does anyone remember the day Paul Callery(spelling??) died for a few

seconds on the ground before being revived?

Can't remember exactly what happened but I remember how serious it

was.

LOL..Don Discher..the worst case of 70's bush footy aggro in the VFL. Thumped Ray Shaw at Victoria Park one day and had to be restrained from taking on the umpire.

Greg Packham also from up that way...."Basketball" Bill Mildenhall too?

Does anyone recall a player by the name of James O'Dea?

Recall he had a mysterious encounter with a fella by the name of John Greening.

Don't think Collingwood will forget that one.

Jimmy never returned to himself after that.

I was actually at Vic Park the day that Don Discher went ape-droppings. One of the funniest things I've seen in footy. He hit someone, got reported, then a few minutes later, he hit someone else, thinking the umpire wasn't looking. Problem was - the umpire was not only looking, he was about two metres away, and pulled out his book shaking his head and similing. Don Discher - quire possibly the worst player we've ever had at our great club.

And yes - "Greaser" Odgers was from Ballarat. Great sportsman - could have played cricket for Australia if he hadn't chosen footy. Just like Greg Packham - great all round sportsmen.

St Kilda is worth 12 in Scrabble which is also the number of our captain and the number of flags St Kilda will have won by the year 3000.

We wore red, black and white until the war years when we changed to yellow (the colours of an ally Belgum) to aviod having the same colours as the Nazis. We switched back to white after the war ended

I'm pretty sure we lost every game for the first 2 seasons (or maybe 3), won round 1 the next season then lost all the remaining games that season.

You're correct skeptic.

"The Saints' first VFL fixture resulted in a fighting 25 point loss to reigning VFA premiers Collingwood, but this proved to be arguably the highlight of a miserable season which yielded no victories whatsoever. Indeed, on three occasions, against South Melbourne in rounds 3 and 10, and against eventual premiers Essendon in round 12, the Saints failed to register a single goal.

Things did not improve during either of the subsequent two seasons and St Kilda entered the twentieth century without having achieved a single VFL win (or even a draw) from 48 consecutive matches, [see footnote 4] a sequence of failure which remains unparalleled to this day.

The breakthrough finally arrived, in somewhat controversial fashion, in the opening round of the 1900 season against Melbourne. The game ended with the scores level at St Kilda 10.8 (68) to Melbourne 9.14 (68) but St Kilda protested to the league that one of Melbourne's behinds ought not to have been counted as it had come from a mark taken after the three quarter time bell had rung. Sensationally, the VFL endorsed the protest, and the official scores of the match were amended to show St Kilda as the winners by the narrowest of margins.

Success disappeared as swiftly and almost as comprehensively as it had emerged with the Saints failing to achieve any further wins all year. The 1901 season brought a similar story, with the only victory for the year being at the expense of Carlton."
