Best ever Atmosphere

Post: # 689843Post TriColourDisciple »

I've been to a lot of games over the years & seen the Saints win some big games in front of big crowds.
But the game that takes the cake for me, as far as the best atmosphere goes, Would have to be the 1996 Ansett Cup Grandfinal at Waverley.
Wow.. Here we were, playing the previous years Day Premiers, packed to the rafters with mainly Saints fans, starved & hungry for a piece of (any) silverware
The atmosphere was electric & of course we Won! The crowd could not contain themselves and swarmed the ground to join our heroes & bathe in our long awaited moment in the sun.
I sung our song with complete strangers in the carpark as we were all united in this wonderful glorious moment...& it was Pre season!
So glad I cut short my Adelaide trip to be there as I'll never forget it.

I assume that we're talking H&A, then it has to be 2004 St Kilda v Brisbane at the Telstra Dome.

That was electric. Even the roar for Brisbane was loud...but the roar when Schwarze kicked that goal was as loud as I've heard at a game.

The next year when Milney kicked 11 was pretty special too...

Being on the outer wing at AAMI for the 2005 QF goes pretty close for me. The '97 PF wasnt to bad either. Wind the clock back 16 years and Rnd 12, 1992 v Coll at the G in front of 80,000 when we won by 1 pt didnt go down to bad either.

Moorabbin had atmosphere like no other venue.

There was many a game when the roar from the grandstand got us home or nearly home.

But I would nominate that famous StK v Carl game (the Daniels-Winmar-Lockett match) as probably the best atmosphere at any game I have ever been to.
The crowd just went beserk !
Scenes of naked jubilation.

The game when Loewe kicked the winning goal from the Soc Club pocket against (Fitzroy?) was also pretty special.

Agree with that.

The LOW point would have to be the Wizard Cup GF the same year when the same saints "fans" jeered the same Troy Schwarze when receiving his premiership medal !!

97 beating North in the prelim, the MCG absolutely rocked, it was destiny we were going to win the next week.

92 beating collingwood, it was awesome.

95 (?) beating Carlton in the pre-season, the crowd was ecstatic.

01?02? beating Brisbane in the bloodbath at the dome, some dozen players didn't front up the next week for either side, and was the beginning of the end for hamill as well. I think we will never see a game as determined and brutal as that ever again. Knobel stretchered, the chant went on around the ground and we as the fans I think were ready to lynch the brions. players were being dropped left right and centre, knees to the chest, elbows to the head. IMO the last brutal game of football in the modern era.

I would have to say the 97 prelim against North... it was such a fantastic match and feeling!! I remember singing "oh when the saints" all the way to the train station... Everyone was yelling and screaming, and it was simply awesome...

The 95 pre season game v Carlton that you mentioned Dan, was in fact in 1996. It's the game that I'm talking about.
It was a very one-sided game, so it wasn't a thriller like many of the other games mentioned, but it was such a buzz to see us blow Carlton away & to see St.kilda holding up a cup at the end was surreal. Came down with a bit of a thud the following week, however, as we were beaten by North.[/quote]

We actually did beat Carlton in the 95 PS cup too. Just not in the final.

Yes, we kicked 6 in the last quarter of that match to steal it - Joel Smith put us in front with seconds to go, only for the Blues to take the ball out of the centre and get the ball to Brad Pearce who missed with the last kick of the game.

Def 97 PF for me. Man that was good. And have to agree with the BNE games in 04 and when Milney kicked 11.

Missed that one (was away) but have heard tell of it quite frequently.

Anyone have a copy? Would be appreciated. :D

For me, only started going to matches regularly in 03 or 04 so it would have to be the 04 PS cup or Milney kicking 11. When the MILNEYYYY chant went up it was just insane. Marking the end of the Lions era was even better.

Top 10 that Ive witnessed in person, in no particular order,

03 Brions game at TD...thanks Martin Pike for costing your side the game :-)

04 Brions game at TD....Schwartaaaaaaaaaaaa

05 Brions game at TD....Milney and our record winning margin

89 Carlton at Moorabbin....Plugger v SOS

08 Round 22 v Essendon. In that last quarter it didnt matter how lucky we were, how the cards for others had fallen..we were 4th and the joint went OFF

92(?) Footscray at Waverley. Tony Francis kicks the sealer from an acute angle with seconds to go.

1997 Preliminary Final. Nuff said

1979 Round 1 v Hawthorn at Moorabbin. After just finishing outta the finals in 78 we start the year beating the reigning premiers

1991 v Adelaide at Moorabbin. Harvey to Lockett in the first 10 secs for the first of nine for the half..after 6 weeks off! Adelaide were described that day as "corks floating on an ocean of noise"

2008. v Hawthorn at TD (3rd quarter) The noise when we exploded outta the blocks after 1/2 time was amazing. Watch the shot of Blakey punching his fists in the air after kicking that goal on the run, with the whole of Level 1 outta their seats behind him

The crowd when Troy kicked THAT goal was unbelievable.. i remember screaming at the top of my voice and i couldn't even hear myself...hugging and hi 5ing randoms is always a highlight as well
Chanting Milney's name was incredible and an awesome moment for him too i am sure.
And this year, being in an aisle next to the pies ferals and giving them heaps as we ended their season was great, even if ours ended the week after.
And even though i wasn't at the 2005 semi final against the crows..the atmosphere at the social club was something special, the next best thing to being there and i won't forget it.

For me it would have toi be Harve's 350th at Subi. To get a rare win over the Eagles on such a day was brilliant. The crowd silenced the entire Eagles crowd as well. One of my favourite days ever.

One memory I have was in 1973 we played North at Moorabbin in one of the last rounds and had to win to stay in the five - North were three goals up at three qtr time and kicked the first two in the last qtr - then we started kicking goals and got up to win - when we hit the front the Moorabbin Stand literally shook in its foundations.

I totally understand what your saying about that great win at AAMI Lenny, but what about the entire atmosphere of the place?
I mean, with 99% of the crowd at feral park barracking for them, I'd imagine it would be quite intimidating.
