Grant Thomas' son

Post: # 719034Post thirty-seven!? »

Saw an article in the sun today mentioning Grant's son, who is now 19 and plays football. He is looking a hopefully being drafted (obviously a bit older, so will have been overlooked in the past).

Does anyone know the father/son rules, and can tell me if within them, the saints would be able to draft him?

And on another relevant note, is he any good, and would be want him???

It used to be 50 games and they changed it to 100

Don't know. I'd be interested to know if he wanted to play for the club.

Not that I care either way but I would hope that what has gone on with his father and the club doesn't cloud our recruiters decision if the kid was the next best available come one of our selections.

Ditto...and I would be confident that would be the case.

Though if he had been a lightning quick mid..it would have improved his chances.

I'm old enough to remember GT as a player and let me assure you he was no hack.

Ran in straight lines, great mark, beautiful kick....tough as nails. One of the best CHB's we've ever had.

He wasn't a hack and if my memory is correct I think he played a few games for Victoria as either CHB or minding resting ruckman. I dont remember why he left the Saints although at this time some of the big financial problems started to emerge. When he left the Saints he went to either North Melb or Fitzroy, I caqn't remember which one.

GT played for BOTH Fitzroy & Nth Melb after he left the saints. I can't remember which order. He was Chairman of Selectors at Nth when they sacked a slow hack wingman named Andrew Demetriou !!

His son looks a pretty good size - there was a pic of him in yesterday's paper... shame we dont get too many father/son picks! I was also unsure if they'd changed the rules regarding the number of games played as one of the GC17 concessions... but i guess not - Spinner would know!

i remember him well, too.

he had ability and could have been very good in a better side ... we were perpetual wooden spooners at the time.

reminded me a bit of goose (though goose is a better player imo) and that might be one of the reasons goose became one of GT's favourites.

i hope the fact that he was doesn't count against goose as he tries to make his way back to senior football.

Lowering father-son eligibility to 50 games was definitely discussed last year, for the Gold Coast reason as you said, but nothing has come of it as yet.

Ironically GT was one of the biggest advocates for extending the F/S rule to 100 games from 50.

Does he play with: opposition score minimalisation services, ball obtaining services, or scoring services?

Playing as an "Over-Age" player in the TAC Cup raises a few questions. How many "Over Age" players have gone on and got drafted? !!

Was our very own Steven Gaertner an overage player last season?
