Nick Riewoldt and Stephanie McIntosh love split
Article from: Sunday Herald Sun

Luke Dennehy

April 19, 2009 12:00am

EXCLUSIVE: AFL star Nick Riewoldt and actor girlfriend Stephanie McIntosh have split up.

Hollywood-based McIntosh and the St Kilda captain yesterday revealed they had ended their four-year romance.

For the past year they have tried to maintain a long-distance relationship as McIntosh has pursued her acting and singing ambitions in Los Angeles.

In an exclusive statement to the Sunday Herald Sun, the pair described recent months as emotionally painful.

"Yes, sadly the rumours are true," they said.

"It is all very new to us, so naturally we have been keeping it very private as it has been far from easy for both of us.

"However, due to physical long distance, indefinite time apart and understanding the importance of each other's careers right now, we have mutually gone our separate ways."

Despite the breakup, the two are in regular contact and Riewoldt is considered part of the McIntosh family.

"We are still the best of friends and speak regularly," they said in the statement.

"This wasn't an easy decision, but one we've made together and we both support each other's dreams."

The couple struck up a friendship at the 2004 Brownlow Medal, but it was not until early 2005 they revealed they had started seeing each other seriously.

McIntosh was then one of the leading stars on Neighbours.

After pursuing a singing career in 2006, she left Neighbours in April 2007.

She turned her attention to Los Angeles, where she now lives.

McIntosh's mother, Sue McIntosh, said the couple understood each other's career situations and described them as "soul mates".

"I think it's the tyranny of distance thing," she said.

"Both of them want the best for each other.

"He has been so supportive with Steph going away and realises if she doesn't do it now, she never will.

"They still love each other to bits and it's not one of those acrimonious kind of things."

The couple were last seen publicly together at the Portsea Polo afterparty in Sorrento in January.

They rarely left each other's side.

Riewoldt visited McIntosh in Los Angeles after the AFL football season finished last year.

Footballers can sometimes struggle with the extra attention they receive when in a relationship with a high-profile celebrity.

But in July 2006, McIntosh said Riewoldt was "very understanding".

"He's playing football, I'm doing this," she said.

"We're both public property, you could say, and we both just get it."

Things are looking positive for McIntosh in Los Angeles.

She is focusing on acting and has new management in Marshak/Zachary.

She has had meetings with some powerful Hollywood producers.

McIntosh also has some close Australian friends in Los Angeles, including former members of the Neighbours cast.

Mrs McIntosh said her daughter would rather live in Melbourne, but understood she needed to be in Los Angeles to further her career.

"Fortunately, we have great friends over there," Mrs McIntosh said.

"We have Pat and John (Farrar) and we have Olivia (Newton-John), which is great comfort for us.

"They have been great."

Would think his fitness more to do with his form rather than a broken heart.

Mate to think it wouldn't have an impact is naive....

All reports state that 'it was mutual' but we may never know....Something like that, especially if it was a one sided decision out of the blue would leave my head in the clouds....Why would Nick be so different.

I know of a few young ladies who would be interested...get in line!

But seiously, footballers are only human. Mutual or otherwise it has to affect him somehow, especially when he knows its going to be open to public scrutiny. All the best to them both. Hope it doesn't become a media circus.

agreed. although it would have an impact negatively, he is far too professional to let it get the better of him

What a sad story.

Those who suggest it wouldn't be affecting Nick on the ground haven't had enough experience of heartache IMO. Don't worry, your turn will come..................

Sad story?!?!?! According to the report they're still on good terms with each other....

Sheeesh hundreds of thousands of people on the planet break up with their partners every day. And those stories aren't all "we still are good friends!"

It usually ends up with AVOs and violent stories or even worse!

Good old Herald Sun - proving itself to be the tabloid paper it is these days - suprised Robyn Riley, Scot Palmer or Andrew Bolt haven't made comment yet.

Still it could be worse - thank god The Age and Caro didn't report it - or we'd be all over the story wouldn't we!!!!!

For heavens sake he's 26 years old, my first marriage was over by then.

I'm still here and never been happier. 6 month old grandson keeping me on my toes and the Saints are flying.

What a terrible comment.

Because some people handle their break-ups badly, we can't feel sorry for Nick and Steph that four years of their lives have just gone, figuratively speaking, down the drain?

He's a good man - I feel sorry for them both.

I don't know her... haven't been in Australia since she became a star... but I hope they can just have some privacy, and they can deal with it as well as possible.

It's tough when someone leads their life in the public sphere: everything - even their personal heartache - becomes fodder for public consumption. It comes with the fame, I guess.

Well, as I say... my heart goes out to them both.

Once his heart is mended I think it's time to think of the future and get the Saints breeding program happening. Let's find him a woman with good genetics and a pre-disposition towards birthing boys. Get some Riewoldts for the 2030's teams.

Long distance relationships don't work.
THe partner is not there when needed socially or emotionally.
Relationships need constant maintenace.

Long distance relationships only occur when at least one career is more important than the relationship.
In this case two careers came first.
Nick wont dump football and follow her to L.A.
She wont take what she can get in Melbourne, she wants a shot at the big time in Hollywood.
They have decided careers come first.

Besides Nick can now find a girl who can actually sing.

The more you know, the more you know you don't know.
When I was a young child, I knew that I knew so much about so much.
Now that I am old and know so much more, I know that I know so much about so little, and so little about so much.
