Crucial First Quarter Friday Night

Post: # 727948Post Beno88 »

Our first quarter on Friday night is going to be massively important. Particularly if it's wet.

Excluding round 1, our first quarters have been good, winning by 12, 16 & 32 and kicking 4, 5 & 5 goals.

However, our recent first quarter form at AAMI vs Port is far from impressive...

2008 Round 6 : StK 0.2.2 - Port 3.2.20
2007 Round 5 : StK 1.2.8 - Port 4.2.26
2006 Round 4 : StK 4.2.26 - Port 6.2.38

So overall : StK 5.6.36 - Port 13.6.84.

The last time we won a first quarter over there vs the power was the 2004 preliminary final (4.5 to 4.0), but despite winning that quarter, it was the quarter where we lost the match due to awful conversion.

If we get a good start, it'll be a massive confidence booster for the players and it'll put us alot closer to that elusive win over Port away.

What I'd have given for that 4.5 in the prelim to be 6.3.

Still, that's all the past. Things have changed. We move on.

I'm liking that 'St Kilda has 3 out of 5 of the top tacklers vs Ports 2 in the top fifty' stat that's floating around...

It is steeling my resolve.

yes bit historically for whatever reason we turn into marshmellows when we play port adelaide.

This does look like a new St.Kilda though...we must bring this ferocious intencity. We will beat this mob if we hit them hard early and sustain it.

good point you make Beno.
besides, a solid start always keeps the feral bogans silenced.
there's no doubt that the boys can compete for four quarters but a good, solid start may prove valuable.

the first quarter is one improvement we have over last year. It's exhausting always having to come back after quarter time

The biggest difference, IMHO, is that we finally have a ruck pair good enough, and in form enough, to stop Lade/Brogan giving their mids an armchair ride.

yep. taking their adoring home crowd out of the equation is an important factor in winning interstate.
