Journalist's Shame File

Post: # 1046899Post cps »

Hi Folks,

As a long-time Saints supporter and member I've been following the events of the off-season reasonably closely. Something that has really p*%#ed me off is the inability or unwillingness of so many in the media to check facts and to promote hearsay. As has been noted in many places on this forum there are numerous examples of articles that contain information that is incorrect.

I suspect that now the truth has come out a lot of these articles will conveniently vanish in the hope that they will be forgotten. I was wondering if others would be interested in setting up a little archive (maybe a sticky on this forum) to remind people of the many "journalists" (I use this term loosely) who've made many outlandish, ridiculous and often nasty comments about the Saints - in effect, our very own journo "Hall of Shame".

What do people here think?

Cheers,

Chris

You have my support.

I propose it should have a "media watch" type format and a tool of the week segment.

I had exactly the same idea a few weeks ago (but i'm very lazy).

I was thinking more a web page dedicated to calling out BS articles like the ones that have been published so frequently lately.

It seems they can publish whatever they want and slander whoever they want and there are no consequences. In fact there is a big proportion of the public that eat it up!

Name and shame!

Agree, though I suspect one sticky may have a fair few more entries than the other

I think that the first thing we need is a factual time line of the known events.

I envision a respect-o-meter... Solely based on the qualty of their work.

Instantaneous respect for their pieces could be calculated.

They think they can rate, berate and twist facts of others... Consider this a public performance review!!

I think too many are too biased for it to work

Any journo who had the gall to criticise St Kilda or one of their players would automatically get "Tool of the Week" , no matter if the criticism was warranted or not

Caro is a classic example. Sledge the Pies and everyone laughs along and agrees no matter what the argument. Criticise the Saints however and shes "Kero Caro" and an example of how women should be still tied to the kitchen sink

Oh, and don't forget to add Miranda Devine to the list.

Her recent article cited KD as a new kind of feminist warrior who was able to use 'social media' in a pioneering way that was supposedly ground-breaking and clever. Never mind about checking the facts and/or considering the damage that it may cause.

As long as it's a thread that focuses on poor journalism - rather than typos - then fair enough.

And poor journalism isn't "Dal Santo struggled to make an impact" when he's had 10 touches (you know, he probably did struggle to make an impact).

Or that Koschitzke is injury-prone (he is).

Some of the crap on the KD saga, however, has been particularly naive.

Clueless and mediocre petty tyrant.

The opposite of poor journalism is good journalism and unfortunately I don't think that is what we are dealing with.

I think commercial journalism versus the old definition of journalism might be closer to the mark. Unfortunately that isn’t reality.

Is reporting verses commentating closer? Commentating (insert gossiping) is big business.
