2013 National Draft Pick #3 - Welcome to the St Kilda FC

Post: # 1338567Post PurpleHayes »

How awesome that we are potentially going to get such a high draft pick?

On top of that, our second pick will be #21 which could also net another good player.

We need to take a deep breath because in a few weeks time no one will remember or care that we lost to the dogs, a bit like when we lost to the Suns at the start of the season..

The young players are playing well, but they won't turn into stars overnight. We do have a future..

Could we net a mid, fwd & defender in one draft?

Until we have an administration that demands success and a playing group that bleeds for the guernsey, St. Kilda will just be a sh*tty football club.

Hahaha love it.

Could Boyd slip to 3rd?

If he doesn't , than rest assured we will get the 1st or 2nd best young midfielder in the country!

Now that's exciting!

I'm still bitter about the loss to Port Adelaide in Round 1 last year...
I knew after that game that we were in for a few years of development.

Ball taken 2nd; Kosi taken 2nd. Neither Dal nor Hayes taken top 10.

Not a science. I'd rather win games.

Previous #3 draft picks:
2012 Lachlan Plowman
2011 Dom Tyson
2010 Sam Day
2009 Dustin Martin
2008 Stephen Hill
2007 Chris Masten
2006 Lachlan Hansen
2005 Xavier Ellis
2004 Ryan Griffen
2003 Colin Sylvia
2002 Jarred Brennan
2001 Chris Judd
2000 Alan Didak

Bit of a mixed bag. Hard to judge the last 2 years. But otherwise they've all had good AFL careers and are all still playing..

Interestingly, only 3 key players taken with pick 3 in recent years - Hansen, Plowman and Day.

I reckon we will get pick #4 or 5. I'd go for a midfielder based on todays performance.

It'll be pick 5 at the highest - my guess is it'll be #4. From Cotters draft on bigfooty...
#1 – James Aish - Midfielder - (183cm/75kg)
At this stage, Aish is regarded as top two pick in this years draft crop. Very silky player with good speed and is a very neat user of the footy. Very much an outside player at the moment and will need to continue to work on his inside game, which will certainly improve. A bit like Brisbanes Sam Mayes when it comes to composure.

#2 – Luke Dunstan - Midfielder/Forward - (184cm/82kg)
Averaged 27 disposals and 5 clearances a game in the colts last year. His speed looked fairly good for an inside midfielder and is superb by foot. He leads by example and could end up a future captain at whatever club is lucky enough to pick him up. He also impacts the scoreboard. Very much a top 2 chance.

#3 – Thomas Boyd - KPF - (199cm/100kg)
Easily the best KPF in this year’s draft and is very similar to Patton. Very good contested mark and has a significant presence about him. He has a massive frame and certainly knows how to use it. Reliable on-field and goal kick.

#4 – Matt Crouch - Midfielder - (182cm/77kg)
He is probably the best player in the draft when it comes to clearance and getting the ball. He gets to a lot of contests and he is always up and about either tackling or extracting the ball. Good hands and a good tackler.

#5 – Josh Kelly - Midfielder - (181cm/71kg)
This kid is going to be talked about a lot this year. In fact, he was talked about a fair bit last year when the mini draft came around. His running ability is just jaw dropping, testing phenomenally in the repeat sprints and the beep test. He has the skills to match, will kick goals and get plenty of the ball.

#6 – Jack Billings – Forward/Midfielder – (182cm/73kg)
He had a very good year in the U18 championships last year and you can count on him to back it up. Others seem to have doubts about his transition to the midfield, but I have no doubt that he will end up playing in the midfield from day one. Billings is a lovely kick of the ball and can really do some damage on the scoreboard.
Some good sounding talent there. From the mock drafts over on bf these 6 seem to stand out, but overall it is spoken about as a deep draft particularly for mids. Boyd sounds like a terrific Tall talent so if he falls to us I think we would have to pick him, but I expect that the Dogs will get a pick before us and take him which would leave us with either Crouch (clearance king) or Kelly (elite outside runner)... both of which we need desperately going forward.

You'd then expect us to go the opposite type of mid for our 2nd pick.

Not sure if its a good idea but thoughts on trading away our top pick for Taylor Adams & a developing backman like Thomlinson or Corr (despite being contracted). Would be a big ask but it could work. Adams is a lot better than Caddy, but dont think he is worth 5 alone. Is ready to go though. Maybe a player and 21 for him. Actually, does anyone know if we are into him?

Its a tough call, but we need a big name to come on board for 7+ years so we need to give up a bit. It would be unprecedented though.

Don't some teams have compo picks up their sleeve that could push us back for pick 3?

Regarding compo picks I'm sure they need to be activated prior to the season starting. With that in mind I don't think I've seen anywhere that there have been any pick activated this year, haven't looked for that info though...

Quoting myself... thats a worry!

Anyway, I've dug up some info and one mid first round and one end of first round pick has been activated by GWS & GC. Doesn't look like that will affect our first pick though.

Cant see how we ge pick 3. Melbourne will get 2 picks IMO and GWS one. The bulldogs will prbably finish below us so pick 5 is where i think we are at. No trading of that pick please unles as Dragit said we can get a Brad Dick type.

Why would Melbourne get 2 picks? I thought the compo pick had gone.

We'd really lose out on that deal. I'd consider it if they through in Jamie Cripps.
