Biggest Sliding doors Moments

Post: # 1389362Post older saint »

I was thinking the other day of the torture we as supporters have endured with closing doors moments:

Some spring to mind

1991 - Elim Final v Geelong - Burke and Grnat knocked out by Ablett Qtr 1, Lockett missing 2 sitters 1st qtr, Vidovic getting reported last qtr
1992 - Frawley doing achilies late in final v Collingwood - Chris Grant killed us next week
1997 - Vidovic doing his knee Rnd 22 v Adelaide
1997 - Everitt breaking collarbone Qualifying Final v Brisbane
2004 - Wanganeen from his backside on the boundry puts Port in front for final time
2009 - Schnieder and McQaulter running into open goal in 1st and 2nd Qtr of GF
2010 - Fisher doesn't see Kosi 50 mtrs clear on otter wing - goes down line Maxwell marks over Gilbert - Collingwood goal
2010 - Bouncing ball Milne

I honestly believe a few go our way we win 1997, 2004, 2009 ,2010 .

Throw in 2004 - crowd invasion for Gherig 100 goals and Saints players totally losing focus.

Round 10, 1963 Junction Oval. In the last minute, Darrel Baldock shot from 30 out on the run and just missed. We would have won by a point and finished top rather than 4th.

1971 GF. Third quarter. We are killing them and 4 goals+ up. Barry Breen has a shot (again) on the run from 30 out and the ball just grazes the post. Hawthorn then got a fluke goal immediately after and were only 20 points down at the final break.

1986. Had we kicked just 9 goals more in each of our games, we would have finished on top.

1991 - Plugger misses an easy mark 20 out in the last.

2004 - Chad Cornes deliberate kick to the boundary not paid to us with bare minutes to go

2009 - the first goal of the last qtr to us would've put us up 13 Pts and full of pump.

2010 - Gilbos phone gets lost in the hotel swimming pool on arrival

2013 - Blake Johnstone misses his ride to Mad Monday

1997 GF - Jason Heatley who hardly ever missed, hit the post, would have put us 5 goals up, Adelaide kick the next two
2009 GF - Hawkins Alleged goal
2009 GF - Scarlets toe poke to Ablett

1961 - my mother refuses another drink in the back of my dads ute late one night. He drives her home. 9 months later, I'm not born.

2013- the moment the flame touched the dwarfs clothes, the current culture went up in smoke. Caro had a new Saints story to milk

September 2006 -Saints president sacks Grant Thomas and files Supreme court writ against him less than 6 months later. Ross Lyon is appointed senior coach and the legend of Lyon is born.

Draft period Oct 2010 - Self preservation and selfish short term planning will be remebered as the legacy of Lyon. If it didn't work 3 or 4 years running what made Rossco think he could land a flag with even more rejects from other clubs?!!!!?

April. 2011 - Ross Lyon declares "the end of an era". He clearly was not interested in the longer term future of the St Kilda footy club (and didn't really care). The footy department and the board and CEO and those backing the 'In Ross we trust' philosophy would no-longer be fooled by an apprentice senior coach. The Saints appoint Chris Pelchen shortly afterward as the head of our footy department.

September 2011 - Ross leaves our club with a list in decline. The failures by Ross Lyon to land the ultimate prize and the bitterness and anger I felt was exacerbated by the realisation of the age profile of our players. That is the legacy of the legend of Lyon.

1997. Joel Smith does his knee late in the season.

2009. Ross Lyon (no doubt a great coach) lets his ego get the better of him, disenfranchises heart-and-soul players Ball, Hudghton and Maguire, believes he can win a flag with mediocrities role-playing to his peerless game plan.

Years ago when they changed the zones and the Mornington Peninsula was taken away from us and went to the hawks. Cost us Leigh Mathews, Dermie and probably a few others I dare say.

As ex-president Peter Summers said:
“If we are going to be a contender, we may as well plan to win the bloody thing.”

Party for North players at Glenn Archer's house.
Mrs Stevens goes into the bathroom to powder her nose.
Forgets to lock the sliding door.
