The Get Mark Williams Thread

Post: # 1413376Post skeptic »

I'm somewhat neutral on the topic but there's a lot of love for him out there

Other than winning a premiership, what's his appeal?
What were the circumstances behind him leaving Port?
Why has he not gotten another snr position?
How's he doing at the Tigers?

Moat importantly what makes ppl think he will be a good fit for us and not another Malcolm Blight?

The Saints are under review, will it make any difference to the underachievers ?

We need a psycho, if we can harness that craziness, we could beat anyone!
But we will NEVER attract a coach.
Imagine signing a 2 year contract, knowing that the board is capable of just cutting you anytime they felt like it.
Like working for the KGB. One false move, and its "pack your winter woolies, wifey, we're headed for Siberia!"

I'm okay with Williams as long as I never, ever have to refer to him by his nickname.

A coach who is known to be able to work with Chris Pelchen would be a good thing.

I think an unproven coach could be even more at risk than Williams. Because of the highly emotive and media driven state we find ourselves in we should not be taking a big gamble on POTENTIAL talent. We are highly regarded by all in sundry as a basket case and unfortunately we've brought it on ourselves whether that is deserving or not. Some stability please.

The worry with unproven coach is that we don't want the same to happen in a couple years again. Get Williams then Harvey in three years

When Ro$$ walked, the club appeared to be blindsided. This time, SW was lulled into a false sense of security "pres sat down and told me i was a long-term coach"
The whole time, they were plotting to get Chocko.
Pelchen was running all the trades. Ben, NDS, Savage, etc with meticulous planning.
The club already decided SW was gone, but kept it quiet to avoid scaring off the new arrivals.
Hard to attract a player without a coach.
Very cunning, sneaky and run with precision.
Players in, "tick" ; coach out "tick"
Chocko is ready. He was in the know the whole time.
Can work with the Pelch.
Will buy into the plan and embrace it.
That's similar to how Freo got Ro$$ and chopped Harvey.
We learnt to be ruthless just like them.
Jaxons says Chocko has the gig.
Club says "new coach in 4 weeks"
Interviews? Bit of theatre, they already have the last page written and signed off.

Just on overall win loss record Williams is outstanding.
I cant really remember the state of the list he inherited but the one he left in 2010 was rubbish.
I certainly dont think his age should be a factor.

No matter what state we are in every coach not coaching would take the job if offered. For every sr coach there are 3 or 4 assistants would love the opportunity.

The only bloke i can ever remember who openly said he didnt want a sr job was Gary O'Donnell.

Choco has balls.

I'm not sure he'll listen but can and has worked well with Pelchen so is the only person for the job.

That's the only criteria relevant.

Cut the BS process crap and FFS appoint him NOW!

then when we win the flag he can say "(redacted in case it's baiting) you were WRONG!"

I like the way Williams goes about it. He pulls no punches and knows how to rebuild a list. Develops youth well while keeping the experience around them. Plus tactically he is miles ahead of SW and any other rookie coach we could look at. He's been around long enough to get stuff done while not BSing the media and members. I am a little tired of the nice guy coach who smiles and says we're on track during media conferences. I want a coach with the stones to tell us how it is and give us hope that he can take the club by the rough of the scrote and pull us back to the top. I reckon Williams is the man for that job.

We're building a new list, and it will be tough going at times. Don't think Williams will be bullied at Press Conferences and by the likes of Dermie. He's rough and tough and that might come in handy. And having a tough coach taking the heat will probably galvanise the young blokes behind him.

A new coach ( or one like a Scott) is looking over their shoulder all the time. Fair enough too. Think Williams is the best choice for the times we are headed for.

Rather go for Gary Ayres, as I think Wiiliams has had his day. Ayres has the old-school Hawthorn attitude and that kind of stability is what we need.

Think you are right with this also they need major Sponsors going forward they need a name

Tudor & Richardson won't do it as good as their reputations are they won't raise profile of the club

Voss would but will probably want a lot more $ doubt club have it after just giving it away with Scott

Williams would do it for a lot less , no real risk , media savvy ,people commenting he is past it compared to younger coaches.
This guy is teaching the young coaches working not only at tigers but also assisting in seminars now.

Would have have respect of senior group at Stkilda ,teach & excite younger players.

I reckon you could be on the money WS.
Sounds a feasible analogy to me.
Sort of explains Plympton's gaffe. The "only joking" explanation was never believable.
Sometimes I think we are happy to believe we are as hopeless as Joe public think we are.

Williams is also suppose to be good with new talent, hence why he was selected for GWS, but left because he didn't get the main gig.
Also did a lot for Richmond this year in development.
There is a lot to like about his resume.
If he's selected, I wont have a problem with it.

Nobody's mentioned Rocket Eade when citing "experienced/proven" coaches. Or Terry Wallace?......after all these are the other two members of Dermie's "holy trinity" of "Great football thinkers" (?!)
I wouldn't have a "problem" with Williams as senior coach, actually wouldn't have a "problem" with WHOEVER the club appoint, and am prepared to give the person every chance to get on with the job. Maybe we should all just be prepared to back the person whoever it is.

Did those blokes win flags TJS?
Williams proved he can do the job, and at a club without a huge amount of money.

Samurai, I was being a wee bit mischevious in citing those guys! I wouldn't consider Gary Ayres either. I think that the previous coaching selection panel were taken in a wee bit by the "Malthouse seal of approval" when Watters came into the reckoning. As I say, I have no preconceptions about whoever the club select, and will be busy getting behind that person from day one!

I could understand Rodney Eade but absolutely no way to Terry Wallace.
Eade took the Dogs to two prelims with limited resources. I think he got the best out of them. with some luck they could have gone further.
I don't rate Wallace at all. Talks waffle.
I recall him saying he left Richmond's list in a better state than when he got there.
Best leave him in his role as "The List Manager"
