No 1 Draft Pick

Post: # 1471458Post ace »

Who are we taking with the No1 draft pick?

Is he a tall, better than Riewoldt?

Is he a mid, better than B Goddard?

Is he a dud like Jack Watts his name?

Can the club afford another 'wooden spoon' they have already lost 10-15,000 members, if they keep playing the way they are they will lose more!

Apparently there is no standout which is a bit of worry at this point. Just our luck.

That does not really matter.

If it does become a problem, trade it for talent then?

Yep, no difference we may as well get pick 5, its a lottery. I'm not sure how deep the lottery runs either, Hopefully things will be clearer at the end of the year.

So why not do what Melbourne did and trade down to gain additional talent, thus instead of one top end pick, we acquire one top end pick and a top talent?

It is very early on, and it's very possible that a clear number 1 will emerge in the coming months.

If we could get great value by trading the pick, I would not be averse to that either. But it would have to involve a proven young player coming to us. And by proven I mean to exclude hopeful prospects (i.e. Lee) and fringe players from top clubs (i.e. Savage).

If we are somehow able to get a Tyson + top 10 for our 1/2/3 pick then I would be happy with that.

From there it equates to having pick 10, 20 and late 30s. From there trading etc could get us to where we want (3 x 20)

Why would another club value pick 1 so much higher than we do?

I agree. In one draft period Melbourne managed to resuscitate it's midfield by getting in Tyson, Vince and Cross, together with Salem who looks really promising. Cross might not last long, but he's provided crucial support and experience around the ball, and he's been well worth it.

Don't forget that they have number 2 draft pick Trengove out for the season, who will bolster that midfield even more.

If we can find a Tyson and a Vince, then that would go a long way to fixing our midfield.

Different assessment of their recruiting department? Desperate need for player X that won't last until their first pick?

Beyond that, pick number 1 has a certain inherent value that goes with it.

I think my preference is either:

1 good young player (e.g shiels or something) + 2 top 20 picks

or

3 Top 20 picks

I'm not so fussed about keeping pick 1.

(p.s its funny how Melbourne have gone from 'dont do a melbourne!' to 'lets do a melbourne!')

Clearly referring to different periods of time?

Right. The only way I can see it happening is if someone else desperately wants a player who will probably go early. Happens a lot in the NBA, they trade up from 7 to 4 so that they can guarantee they'll get a certain guy. It works in the NBA a) because they can trade in the middle of the draft, and b) because college form is a pretty good guide to NBA form. Not so sure that holds in the AFL.

i remember we once traded the number 1 pick to hawthorn for three dropkicks....harding, russo and handley if my memory is not fading \

...think handley played about 4 or 5 games, ...harding wasn't too bad for a couple of years but the come home factor meant he did better for the weagles......russo played 30 odd ordinary games.........

...nah.... keep the no 1 pick ffs.....

So far Wright has played 2 x games in Under 18 champs

Game 1
1 goal - not in best

Game 2
0 goals - not in best

Difficult to call him a 'standout'.

By contrast Boyd only played one game last year and kicked 6.

he has been the stand out in his age group for years...and will be at years end....wait and see...

during the gws brissie game they virtually called it the wright cup but said he was a 2 to 3 year project player....
