If he wanted to get to 300 that badly I reckon he would have played it with us. I think 5 or 6 at Sorrento will do him.

The AFL should turn this into a positive. A rag tag bunch of no-hopers, drop-outs and rejects. This is a classic for a bad comic movie plot. Surely to god there are better players available than Mitch Clisby?
The Bombers should get Sheeds back to coach these guys. Would totally suit him.

It's called The Replacements. NFL team has their roster go on strike due to a pay dispute, so the rag-tag bunch of racial stereotypes comes together under formerly retired coach, leading to hilarious situations and an unlikely playoffs birth. Keanu Reeves plays the choker college quarter back who brings this group of misfits together, and even manages to get into the pants of the head cheerleader.

Isn't it just for the nab cup?

Different rules for the real season when the druggies are serving in season suspensions.

Call me cynical but this is a set up.

Imagine this all falls into place for the NAB cup, offering sympathy to Essendon because the "poor players" have to sit out because of the provisional suspensions.

So the comp meanders into the Home & Away season, and maybe, just maybe, the AFL Tribunal grows dome balls and actually take to the players and EFC with an almighty cricket bat (borrowed from the giant killing Irrish) so what happens then?

The Second XVIII goes back to VFL and beyond and Essendon can't field a side?
Can't posdibly let that happen, so the AFL & EFC come to an agreement, insert a two year sunset clause before the ring ins do the time for Essendon players crimes.

London to a brick that's what's going to happen.

Sounds like just the outstanding crappy movie im after :)
Here is what rotten tomatoes says. Similarities in bold.
The 1987 National Football League players' strike inspired this sports-themed comedy. The Washington Sentinels (Essendon Bombers) are one of the strongest teams in pro football -- until contract negotiations break down and the Sentinels go on strike. Determined to play the team's schedule, owner Edward O'Neil (Paul LIttle ) recruits a ragtag band of scab players, to be headed up and whipped into shape by the retired veteran coach Jimmy McGinty (Gene Hackman/Sheeds). At the top of the recruitment list is quarterback Shane Falco (Keanu Reeves), a promising athlete until a catastrophic defeat in the Sugar Bowl dashed his confidence. Joining Falco on the team are Clifford Franklin (Orlando/Clinton Jones), a receiver who can't catch (kick) the ball; Nigel Gruff (Rhys Ifans), a chain-smoking Welsh soccer player; Bateman (Jon Favreau), a former cop with anger management problems (Brock Mclean/Nick Stevens etc etc); Fumiko (Ace Yonamine), a sumo wrestler new to football; and Wilkinson (Michael Jace), a convict on parole to the Sentinels. Can McGinty (Sheeds) mold his new squad of misfits and no-hopers (who truly love the game) into a winning team? Brooke Langton plays Annabelle, head of the Sentinels' cheerleading squad (who has to contend with replacements of her own), and football commentators J Madden and Pat Summerall appear as themselves.

If the rumour is true that #44 might be playing for them, then yes; they might.

It is looking more and more likely that Essendon are going to have a very, very strange year, if it isn't already.

given he is tonight training with Strathfielsay - and that he was virtually ''retired' by the AFL would doubt it-- think he's too much a saint But that's my heart speaking.

My St Kilda pessimistic side tends to agree with you.

I said this in another thread but I hope a defeat like that won't put any pressure on the coach as Richo deserves to have a go when we are going a bit better in a few years time.

As ex-president Peter Summers said:
“If we are going to be a contender, we may as well plan to win the bloody thing.”

While the Port coach looked to protect his club's on-field interests, Zebras general manager John Mennie said his club would not stand in the way of Brown or Jones.

"It's their call whether they go to Essendon as one of their top-up players. We believe Mitch Brown is very keen and we'd be keen for him to do it because it gives him an opportunity to get picked up in the future. Clint Jones is a little bit older, so Clint will make up his own mind on what he wants to do," Mennie said.

I think it says in one of the reports that these rules will be the same for the regular season, in the even that essendon players are suspended...
