The Flux Report: Round 13

Post: # 1560452Post AeonFlux »

Still no Rodger, so you people are stuck with me for a bit longer. :(

Ok, on with it then. For those who haven't had a chance, the following RICHO REPORT is a pretty damn good summation. ONYA RICHO!
http://youtube.com/watch?v=CGQ6omtV_S8

A couple of additional Aeon thoughts...

- DOWN THE LINE 'GET OUT" OPTIONS!

They managed to trap us very deep in defense too often. So deep in defense, that at times Roo was having to provide the 'get out' option... IN THE BACK BLOODY POCKET!!!

That meant that when we then needed to go long down the line, Roo was the bloke doing the 'long down the line' kick. This is where the lack of a ruckman who could take a mark to provide that down the line get out option really hurt. Hey, we lacked a ruckman who could even bring the ball to the ground!

I like Billy's 'enthusiasm' around ruck contests, but (with Roo being drawn so deep) I thought that this was the game for the year so far where Billy hurt us the most... way more so than in other games for which he's been criticized. He hurt us, not for what his opponent did, but for what Billy didn't/can't do... take marks around the ground, or at least even get the ball to the ground for us.

THEIR PRESS: Both when defending and when we were defending.

Us defending...... apart from what I've mentioned above about Roo and Billy, what I'd really like to see against set-ups like Footscray used last match, is to get the footy to our quickest blokes (Steven, Webster, Savage) around the middle of the ground... because if we get a chance to run through the lines, and kick it over the press, then the ball needs to be with our quickest blokes. But instead, we were too often forced to go wide, and then try and switch the play back and forth across the ground.

Them defending...... EASTON BLOODY WOOD!!! :x and his bloody 'intercept' marking!!! He was a real thorn in our side. However, I'd argue that over half his 'intercept' marks... weren't... coz we kicked it straight to him!!! ARRRRRGGGGHHHHHHH!!!
Roo and Josh must have been so pissed off!!!

So, what else to do instead....
- Get more separation between Bruce and Roo, and more often??? So at least when we go long and deep, they don't have all their defenders able to be in the one spot. We were still too predictable going into the forward line.
- When we had them all back in our forward 50, with little free space to pinpoint a pass (hence the bombing it long to EASTON BLOODY WOOD!!! :x option.) why not then do the switching of the play across the forward 50 arc thing a bit? And why not, when say 50-60m out, hand ball to Savage running by for a proper long bomb... over the head of EASTON BLOODY WOOD!!! :x
And same for Roo's last shot on goal when he was too stuffed to make the distance from inside 50? We we inside the arc, but guys, think outside the box!!!

- Speaking of EASTON BLOODY WOOD!!! :x ... I thought that Members was good, but who was on EASTON BLOODY WOOD!!! :x ....... was it Members him? (Richo said that Schneids' was told to tell whoever was on him to make themselves 'relevant'.)

- Speaking of Members... TAKE THE BLOODY SHOT MEMBERS!!! Be decisive!!! BE RELEVANT!!!

- I can now clearly see why we had to pass on Jerry in the draft. If the giant panda Boyd is worth $1mil a season, then Jerry would be worth the entire salary cap!!!

- Delaney, Dunstan and Faz CAN NOT HANDBALL properly!!!! Watch them. They barely make contact with their fist, and almost push the ball rather than punching it....... forcing them to loop it higher (and hence SLOWER) in the air to get any distance. There are a couple of other blokes down back in the same boat. I've just forgotten whom, and don't want to name the wrong blokes. (Geary is not one of them.)

- Seb in contrast, showed 'em how... both by hand and foot he was very composed and very accurate. ONYA SEB!

Changes:

Farren out.

I want MacKenzie in, as he is Farren with more speed...... AND he can handball!!! But Fisher has to come in, as Effndrug (Sam Mitchell, for a change, you have NOTHING to apologise for) has more tall forwards than Footscray. In fact, Brisbane aside, so does everyone.

Dunstan still doesn't look right. He needs a rest. A REAL rest. (I fail to 'get' how playing a game of VFL footy is constantly quoted as being 'a rest' ??? Or is the VFL like that old tanking bruise-free-footy Melbourne crap???) Saunders, MacKenzie or Eli in for Dunstan.

And Minch in the mid field more.

And Paddy into the gym...... think what he will be able to do when the puppy fat is converted to muscle.

And go easy on Gilbo. As one wise intel' gatherer pointed out on here, those turnover kicks were primarily due to the lack of options being provided up field for him to kick to. And a bit of shepherding from team mates wouldn't have gone astray either!!!

Thoughts Sainters?

Thoughts, Rodger?

- Aeon.
