WEALTHY donations from some of Geelong’s biggest backers have helped mask the club’s short-term financial hurdles.

The Cats will tonight announce an operating loss in the order of $600,000 at the annual general meeting, despite posting a $2.3 million net profit for the financial year.

The net profit outcome is a result of $3 million in donations received this year as part of the club’s “Our Ambition” fundraising and debt-demolition campaign, which will fill the club’s coffers with $13 million over five years.

Geelong lost about $2 million in potential revenues this year as a result of the reduced capacity at Simonds Stadium, demolition of Club Cats and relocation of the pokies as a result of the stage-four redevelopment, meaning the $500,000 shortfall was as good as the Cats could have asked for.

PORT Adelaide is back in black for the second consecutive year posting a $14,840 profit for 2016 despite a forgettable season on the field.

Power chairman David Koch announced the after depreciation profit today, which is the club’s first back-to-back financial gain in 10 years.

“The Port Adelaide community has once again shown us exactly how passionate and committed they are about their club,” Koch said.
