Mature recruits

Post: # 1727440Post poatina »

I’m looking at Geelong at the moment with Tom Stewart and Tim Kelly- blokes playing senior football outside the AFL before being drafted after being overlooked several times. I think the last one of that type we drafted was Tom Lee and that didn’t work out well, but with our high draft picks of recent years struggling , getting in a couple of capable ,experienced footballers , not boys in school, is very appealing . I hope we aren’t so fixated with perennially rebuilding that we don’t look at this.

Good post.
Dont forget Liam Ryan, Billy Gowers, Bailey Fritsch, David Mirra and a few others.

Billy Gowers already has 12 goals this season in a bottom side!

Just need to be careful you aren't clogging the list with mature players that are marginally better than our teenagers, unfortunately the temptation to play them ahead of kids is too great, particularly for a coach who is facing the axe and desperate for a win for the now over developing kids into a finals side down the track.

Yep, that would be a real (Ryan) gamble for us.

Our recruiting is of course v poor. Haileybury would have more scouts than the Saints. Worse, even when it is crystal clear that a player won't play a/another senior game (Eg Pierce) they're retained on the list while they're contracted because we're so broke we won't pay out even a minimum wage player.
We have absolutely nothing to lose by drafting the best player from one the state leagues but we probably won't because: we l
love trading our second round pick which is about where you need to strike to pick up a classy player like Tim Kelly; we're too thin on the the ground to know which way to go with the pick and most of all - we haven't got the vision or the guts.
How bad do we have to be before we have a clean out, starting with the list manager and head recruiter?
