Cam Guthrie

Can anyone see why we wouldn't have a decent lash at Cam Guthrie? 25yo - can run/spread - tough - has skills - reasonable ball user. I can't see how we'd be worse-off with him in our team (certainly an upgrade on some of our existing mids). You've gotta pay someone and given we'll have already torched $900K on Freeman by the end of 2018 - this would seem a much better investment. Personally - I'd much rather have him in my team over an ailing Ablett if I was the Cats.
Anyway - the article also seems to drive the narrative that Sloan is likely to come to us. I know he's an inside mid but - he's a much better version of the ones we have and quite frankly - I'd rather have him and make him Captain at the same time. The only part I don't like however is this idea of a 5 year deal for him.

Re: Cam Guthrie
He's not leaving the Cats.
Just a media beat up driven by management to get the Cats to play ball.

Re: Cam Guthrie
Looked like he was on the verge of becoming an elite mid before Dangerfield's arrival. I think he could be almost as good as Jack Steven when in the top 3 of a mid group. Would absolutely offer him 600k over 4 or 700k over 3

Re: Cam Guthrie
Agreed - even if just to jack-up his value which the Cats would have to match. Surely they haven't got that much Cap space down there?!?mad saint guy wrote: ↑Thu 31 May 2018 10:42am Looked like he was on the verge of becoming an elite mid before Dangerfield's arrival. Until we have an administration that demands success and a playing group that bleeds for the guernsey, St. Kilda will just be a sh*tty football club.

Re: Cam Guthrie
He's not Jimmy Bartel or a crash & bash player but I do think that is a little harsh.
There is not many AFL players I'd call soft.
The least physical player I have seen for many years currently runs around for the saints wearing a very famous saints number.
He's a lot more physical than Billings or Gaff for that matter and though older an upgrade on regulars such as Stevens, Steele, Sinclair etc and would give a one paced midfield some pace.
He's got good speed and can break the lines and decent skills.
I'd get him if available and price was reasonable.

Re: Cam Guthrie
remember how our club seems to undevelop players.
Coaches, game plan, or some other reason- it's fact that we're toxic.
Try Membrey.
And Bruce.
And a lot of VFL guys who just stagnate and don't come up.
Take Guthrie or Sloane or Josh Kelly etc out of a nurturing healthy environment,
put them in our colours,
watch them become C-Grade.

Re: Cam Guthrie
Cant believe saints have spent 900k on Freeman, is that correct? If so what has the money been spent on?
Guthrie would be twice as good as the current crop of saints midfielders except for Jack Stevens. I cant see Guthrie coming to the saints.

Bruce was an average player at best before he came to the saints, his game improved and he became a very good player. He has had a bad run with injuries over the past 2 seasons which has held him back. Membrey couldn't get a game at Sydney, he is now a very good forward, its not the clubs fault that he has developed the yips kicking for goal, his last 2 seasons he kicked at close to 70%. We have also made players out of Roberton, Savage, Hickey.
Like ALL clubs, not every player we recruit/draft will become A grade talent.
But that doesn't suit your agenda of continual bashing of the club

Membrey played 1 game for Sydney. Bruce a handful from GWS. We actually did develop them into good players and Bruce from a backman into a key forward. Those two have kicked close to 50 goals a couple of seasons since being at the Saints. They are both under 25 and have heaps of footy in front of them. They will get better.
Have we not developed in the last couple of years guys like Long, Phillips, Rice and Marshall into AFL standard footballers for example. You will find we have. Same as Coffield and Clark this year.
Plenty more examples like above. E.g. Jimmy Webster since being drafted and Savage when we got him as a 21 year old from the Hawks.
I don't buy into this we can't develop and we ruin players theory as a club. Its nonsense.

Says we can't develop players then picks out two that came as nobodies and became good forwards at the Saints.WellardSaint wrote: ↑Thu 31 May 2018 12:35pm remember how our club seems to undevelop players.

Very strange post.
As for Guthrie, would he be a starting midfielder for us? Absolutely, so I'd take him for sure. He's in the age bracket that we're lacking too.

Re: Cam Guthrie
2018 - pick 3 and Gaff
2019 - Josh Kelly
2020 - Flag.
Thats ALL we need to do
Freeman Goddard McCartin are acually going to make it.
We have Long, Billings, Gresham, Membrey, Battle
Bruce is an endurance machine for Wing/Forward
Marshall and Hickey can hold ruck duties.
We have an abundance of key backman in Claravino,Austin Carlisle and Brown is only 30 NOT 35
Steven is 30 not 35
Clark and Coffield are both gems!!
Out list is not as bad as the media makes out.
Weve been ravaged by injury and leadership and changes not handles well.
With Gaff, Kelly, Clark, Coffield and pick 3 (rankine) come 2020 with all those youngsters finally getting strength and 75-100 games??
Look out. Saints will dominate.
