Cult Players at the Saints

Post: # 1750056Post Sainternist »

Who is your favourite cult player to play for the Saints?

I think I might have to go with big Lazar Vidovic. He was tough, intimidating to his opponents and had bit of skill to boot. He and Spida Everrett were a formidable rucking duo. Sadly, of course we lost both before the '97 GF. Boy, we could use a ruckman like big Lazar today. For what I've heard, he is a ripping bloke and still follows the Saints. Or at least I've seen him occasionally post comments on Facebook for the fan groups and the club's offical FB group. He's definitely the type of bloke I could sit down and have a beer with.

Having a beer with him sounds fine, just don't buy a used car from him.

I used to like Mick Dwyer.

Alves had his inexplicable favourites, too, and the likes of Dwyer and Matthew Lappin spent far too much time rotting in the reserves.

Rocket Rod Owen could have been anything & was injured far to often, was touted as better than Plugger when they both came to the club!

The more you know, the more you know you don't know.
When I was a young child, I knew that I knew so much about so much.
Now that I am old and know so much more, I know that I know so much about so little, and so little about so much.

Robbie Muir...much loved by the fans. Skilful but volatile. Would have fared a lot better with the support, education, policies and structures in place for today's players. 68 games over 7 years wasn't nearly enough.
Funny that I thought of Rene Kink though. Was mega excited as a kid when he came to the Saints.

In my time (and the hubris of my own imagination?)
Cowboy, Muir, Callery, Gorizidiz, Rex Hunt, WOW Jones, (one of the Cunningham’s) Burns Pekin and Peckett, Kourka, Trianidis, Keogh, Owens.
There were legend cult heroes like Winmar, Loewie of course, but the lesser lights seemed to resonate with mood of the gallows humor of those days too.

I heard Big Lazar on a sports program or a repeat of a pre-recorded interview recently, and he spoke about his childhood and playing days out Broady way, and then playing in Castlemaine. He would knock back match payments if he felt he hadn't played well enough.
Definitely one of the highlights of a great year was La-Zar in 1997. Oh, what might have been...
He was interviewed in the great Marching In fanzine that year and he swore that if he ever played in a St Kilda Grand Final that he would make sure we won it - and that they would have to bring in a Sin Bin the next season. :D

I think you might find Enrico, that the 'issues' weren't so much to do with dodgy cars, but with dodgy people test driving them... through red light cameras.

(And Rod Keogh's loss was a largely overlooked blow to our chances that year also, IMHO.)

Fankie, defly, but in the recent era, no one except the G-Train comes within the inner zone of cult-like instant and automatic magentic switch and lock than Mr. S. Milney. Mr. Baker also deserves the salute of respect. Let's forget about Stevie J, we know which Stevie is best.

We had so many of them! I loved those often flawed characters and quirky warriors; Sidey (my first jumper number until he left), Perovic, Cunno, Rocket Rod, Frankie Coghlan, Max, Powell, Yapper, G-Train...I wish we had someone now. Closest we have to a 'character' right now seems to be Carlisle.

No, I remember he was more highly rated than Plugger. Tony Jewell raved about Owen the new 17 yo recruit, even compared him to Royce Hart. The young Plugger didn't get a mention.

The reason why Lappin spent so much tine in the reserves was that his best friend was the amber fluid.
