Name the top experienced stars that have really helped St Kilda

Post: # 1750285Post shanegrambeau »

With the Hannebery talk now generating some talk, (Listen to Terry Wallace on SEN for an 'against' vote), I was wondering about our history of picking experienced bonafide 'A' of 'B+'graders with say 100 plus games under their belt at their respective clubs, who went on to really prove to be stars and leaders at St Kilda. I can barely think of one. I can think of many premiership stars past their prime who helped us soldier through - the ex-Carlton teams- and I can think of goodish players that served well for a few seasons, but do we have anyone in the calibre of Hannebery (JIm Krakour (magic) - played 13 games, Stephen Newport (decent) - played 39, Tim Pekin - a favorite of mine played 113 and he was cool and skilled, but hardly a star). So just wondering - I suspect I am missing a bevy of stars, but who are they?

PS. Of course I realize we should look at all opportunities as fresh chances to 'break the mold' and be free of past baggage, but I'm just curious

Kenny Sheldon played some terrific games for us.

Yes, thank you. G-Train! All-Australian at both clubs. Legend at St Kilda. Aaron Hamill? I heard he had leadership qualities which would have been great in those early Thommo sides and great opening season, but he seemed to be injured a lot. I had to check and found out he managed over 16 games a year for his six seasons with us. And the two Swans were really good players for us. I suppose Gary Sidebottom, George Young etc. had decent stints with us too coming from WA and they were what I thought of as A graders at the time. (Biased 13 year old speaking)

Yeah, he was 27,28 and 29 yrs old when he came and three seasons for 53 games isn't bad but in those days, it almost seemed routine that we'd pick up some fill-up players from Carlton's bulging sack of capable players either a bit older or starting to be fringe players. Sheldon was impressive, for sure. We'd want more from a Hannebery though, although, come to think of it, maybe a Sheldon-like career might be something more realistic. Not worth our best draft pic though. IMO.

Gehrig, Hamill, Scheinder, Dempster
Heath Black
Gardiner
Steven King- though past his best
Lazar Vidovic - almost helped us a win a flag in 97
Matthew Young
Powell
Lawrence - before he lost the plot
Silvio Foschini
Paul Morwood
Tim Pekin
Sheldon
McConville
Luke Penny would have been very good but a knee injury cut his career with us short.
vVss was good value

Many like Jim Krakouer and Jesaulenko did not really accomplish a lot as players after joining us.

Had only played 3 games when he joined us: Jason Heatley. And Milne from Essendon who has probably been the best value of any Saint who had been on another clubs list.

How many players traded in at age 28 or over have had a huge impact on our performances? Hard to think of any.

A very underrated ruckman in Paul Harding played well for us too.

top experienced 'stars'

Apart from the ones above I can't think of any real stars apart from Jezza who came to us and played and then coached. Can't think of a star player who we gave up a first round draft pick for though ( can think of a few dud trades we've done for first rounders)

Rex Hunt came to the Saints in the mid 70's but don't think you'd call him a star. He played over 50 games with us

'The real thing' ( Russell Morris) and Dean Anderson ( current board member) came from Hawthorn in the early 90's and both played over 60 games with the Saints. We played finals during that period and they were handy players. There was a thread with a video from that time and both feature

Morris was more than handy, played some great games and was rarely beaten. Would love a player like that at the club right now.

Aaron Hamill. Michael Gardiner. Fraser Gehrig. Stephen Powell. Luke Penny (unluckily injured) Adam Schneider. Sean Dempster.
All these players contributed to making the Saints a very competitive side between 2001-2011
Apologies to those I’ve missed.

Craig O ‘Brien a very good player.
Forgot about Max Crow. How many good years did he give us?
A lot of the players on the longest of the lists, from SaintsRising, were not big stars when they came (Lazar Vidovic for example) . McConville Foschini (sp), Morewood was class - they all played three or four seasons, for about 50-60 games and were probably good B graders. No all Australians except the big G with us (or ever) thinking perhaps Rex Hunt, Russell the real thing Morris had one brilliant season for Hawthorn and then, judging by my obnoxious Hawthorn friends at the time, was disappointing for them. For us, I think he was what the Wakelins were (remember they were prematurely discarded by us) Among all these, perhaps Craig O’Brien - and perhaps because he was like those pesky Hawthorn forwards now, a very good experienced acquisition (not A grade star, perhaps)

Paul Harding, yes, too was good although I can’t forgive him for a chest-Mark-bouncy in the ‘92? Final against Geelong. He went back to West Coast and got a flag? And also credit to the Heath Black - real shame we lost him

In the recruiting sense from other clubs it is a good list of players but only Max Crow won a B&F and G train won many a goal kicking award and played a stack of games. I think he was the best by far, top performance over a long period. A star.

McConville was arguably the pick of the Carlton bunch, although Sheldon became a good back pocket. Tim Pekin was a great get at the time and O'Brien was the 90's version of Milne .

Barry Pascoe was a super player.

Worst ever trade was Ian Stewart for Bill Barrot. Barrot was a star for Richmond. Played 2 games for us while Stewart won another Brownlow.

Didn't Pascoe have a twin brother who played for saints as well?

Well, Sheldon...although his effect on our actually performances was greater as a coach, I was a fan as a player. 'Hodge Syndrome' is not a common occurrence in the history of football.

Don't forget Wow Jones, Spiro Kourkemelous and Alex Marcou all came at the end of the Baldock era which was built on by Kenny. We became more competitive.
