Moorabbin oval surface

Post: # 1813351Post B.M »

Was down there recently and the surface is ordinary at best! Heavy, patchy and uneven. I’ve played on suburban grounds that are better.

The facilities are obviously great, and obviously being back at Moorabbin is good but the ground surface is nowhere near as good as Seaford, which is still like carpet.

It needs an upgrade

That's quite amazing and damning. I remember the ruins of Moorabbin in that 2009 / 2010 period and the oval was perfect, it was like a bowling green. The best it had been in its history...& then we moved.

The surface is fine. Funnily enough - like most ovals in Winter - it dies off and the winter grass infests (hence, it looks patchy). But it's not uneven. And also remember that Moorabbin was originally build on swamp lands. You can put as much sand under it as you like but, there's still underground water tables there that move all over the place depending on rainfall.

It's actually at it's best over summer when the natural couch takes over and then it seriously is like a bowling green (which is when the players spend the majority of time training on it). Mid week training in-season now is basically glorified circle work.

Really good. It gets a lot of traffic with the girls there as well. Just recently one end became a little gluggy which means the warm up is generally at the other end of the ground. Seaford looked exactly the same at this time of the year.

Mate, I had a kick on it with my son the other day.

It’s rubbish, and not AFL standard. The positive spin is just that, spin. And Moorabbin does not have the summer grass, that all suburban grounds. (Like Parkdale) have been covered with.

There are bare patches all over the ground

I was at Seaford three weeks ago watching the boy play basketball, it’s like carpet.
The facility is starting to go like s*** already though.

Club trained at Trevor Barker Oval this week and Ratts stated Moorabbin needed a bit of a rest due to heavy traffic.

Tony.

Why would they move training to Sandringham if the surface was ‘really good’?

I said that it was rubbish, because it is in poor condition at the moment. I’ve seen it with my own eyes when I had a kick on it, my local ground has a far better surface. The grass was re-laid at Moorabbin in 2006 and then basically not used from 2011-2018.

The surface needs re-doing.

There's a big difference between needing a rest and letting the grass recover and recompletely resurfacing it. I haven't been for a few weeks, but I have been there a number of times this year and always thought it was pretty good.

Pretty good?

For a $30M elite training facility. Is that good enough?!

You would want the surface they practice on, similar and on par with surface they are playing on. The ground is not in great condition, hence having to move training... and that’s NOT good enough at that level.
