Coaching 10, Effort 10, Skill 0

Post: # 1813699Post ss1986 »

We wont win, purely through a lack of skill.

I can cop that, because we can fix it at the trade table.

We officially have a coach that isnt afraid to make changes, be crafty, get on the blower and elicit complete effort.

Proud of the team tonight.

For what it’s worth - Carlisle looks cooked, and McKenzie... well, he will not be there when we push for a flag, because he is simply not good enough.

What was so good about the coaching?

Carlisle on Tex
McKenzie on Betts
Battle on Lynch

4 small fwds?

More entries and same problems with efficiency

A system, effort, and happy to change things that aren’t working.

The way Adelaide came out, we wouldve been done by 25 goals tonight under Cho.

Lots of effort again but we are still not clinical in the forward half. Crows also took their chances in front if goal and we didn't. That was the difference in the end as we dominated periods of the game.

Crows are currently a top 8 side so we aren't that far off being one possibly. We need to get in players with good foot skills in the trade period.

The system is basically the same. Fact is we lost with the same issues as under AR

Slow ball movement, Poor entries, Poor conversion

10 goals from 55 entries

Nearly our whole list have only ever played under richardson with his game plan...I fear it’s going to take some undoing through both player turnover and retraining a better game plan...and that as a supporter is the most bitter pill to swallow.

Take yer blinkers off. If AR had been coaching the result would've been the same - except for the slagging off he'd be getting on here.

Rarely does a team play without effort, effort is really a non negotiable... especially at the professional level.

It’s confidence, focus and execution that counts

Having McKenzie and Parker in the team meant we were playing with only 20 players. That makes it hard from the get go.

The positive is that we can improve our side next week by including Acres, Hannebery, Paton and Steven even as a forward with only occasional runs thru the middle

From the stats alone out “small” forwards did not impact with each having very low possession numbers led by Long but with Hind, Lonie and Parker not much in advance of Long

Then McKenzie

Apart from Long those I have named are those we need to move on from - along with others

I note we were again out marked, as they did to us over here

Apart from Steven because of his class there is not much pressure coming from Sandringham - but perhaps it is time to at least reward White so Paton for McKenzie and White for Savage

Acres, Hannebery and Steven replace any of Hind, Parker, Lonie or Long

And Sinclair is just too variable - I just think he needs to work on pace because if you are of that build you need to be quick, very quick

So putting him with a sprint coach - does that still happen because it used to once upon a time and was most beneficial

Chipping around the backline seems to end in tears too often.Someone needs to be able to hit up that kick inboard.
Thats why McKenzie is a bit of a liabiliry sometimes. Cannot spot up anyone. Paton definitely better.

Totally agree our skills are poor - but under an elite coach who demands nothing but perfection I am sure we can improve. As I said in the game day thread our coaches need to spend the entire preseason honing the players skills - kicking, handballing & contested marking.

Ratten like Richo was hamstrung today by players being out of form and not pulling their weight.

Yep. And this is where my absolute frustration with Billings is borne from. Here's a guy we drafted (very early pick) specifically because he has great skills, especially kicking skills. More often than not he hasn't converted in the 5 years he has played. Even tonight, a relatively simple screw kick snap from a pack went out on the full. His field kicking tonight was disgraceful. I don't know whether it's execution or decision making or both. Compare him to another young player of similar age, position type etc, Zac Merrett. Beautiful kick and sets things up every time. People will defend Jack but the fact remains that probably our two highest paid players on the ground tonight were dreadful in Carlisle and Billings. Throw in Bruce missing relatively simple set shots from 35m out pretty much straight in front and Membery hitting the post as well from another simple shot (and Lonie) and these skill errors are killing us. ALL those shots should have been converted. In reality a couple always get missed, but not all of them. It's not AFL standard. We dominated large periods of the game which is definitely a positive, but this has been going on for years. RECRUIT SOMEONE WHO CAN F$%KING KICK!!!

I noticed NJB in the forward line in the last qtr.
Did Ratts n Playfair do that to stretch their defence and upset their game plan?
At least Ratts tries something new.

Credit needs to go to the Crows, they shut down our switch and manned the corridor. The only 45 kick I remember was the one poor Marshall tried to a murder of Crows.

Adelaide also executed the short kicks well, the same as Collingwood do to us. We didn't react and cut off the hit ups. Some of the Crows footskills were sublime and some of their handballs WERE F@CKING THROWS!!!

Skill - the worst list in the competition.
Effort has been variable all season.
Coaching whether Richardson or Ratten has been above average and kept the Saints off the bottom of the ladder.
