A huge gamble by a football department who, quite simply, panicked.
A massive error that will cost us the opportunity to sign quality free agents for the next two years.

Re: 1, 2, 3........ . Everybody panic!
I appreciate the sentiments and the nice movie analogies, but if we don't embrace an absolute and total Commitment to Excellence now - and make a stand now - those defeats will keep happening, year after year. I'm sorry, but a line was crossed on Saturday. This is about the fabric of the football cl...

Re: Matt Parker
Wasn't good enough. Expect he'll dominate the WAFL this year, because it's nowhere near AFL level and he's been trained in an elite system for two years. Don't forget, Paul Hunter dominated the SANFL last year and was obliterated so badly in his first two AFL games that you've got to question the ju...

Re: Humiliation
This is truly disgusting. An abject humiliation. I can’t even express my anger. If we don’t win, all my suspicions about where we are as a footy club are confirmed. I’ve heard people talk about our “depth”. List cloggers and VFL standard players aren’t “depth”. Club’s credentials as a credible footb...

He was far & away IMO our best tonight just needed some support from the the rest of the team Had an amazing game. Made a couple of errors but otherwise, his effort was incredible and his work rate off the charts. Nobody else down there was trying half as hard. His best game. Honestly, he did t...

Re: Has Hannebrey been a good signing?
Obviously he hasn't been so far, but geez, he does look head and shoulders above the rest when he does play.
Hopefully he plays 50% of the games this year and all finals. Durability is clearly not his "one-wood", as the MMM-types would say.

Wow..brilliant post. No wonder I had a shattered sense of self-identity by the time I turned 16 that year! (Blame the Saints always) But Jeansy finishing in '76, those terrible last five games - perhaps he had switched off? - and then straight to a wooden spoon in '77 It's a genuinely good question...

Re: What happened Round 19, 1976?
As an aside, that was Allan Jeans' last year coaching St Kilda. He retired at the end of the season, claiming he was burned out. Five years later, he joined Hawthorn and won more flags than anyone could have dreamed of. Does seem like a sliding doors day for our club, although those who saw the 1978...

Re: Jimmy Webster...almost the forgotten man
I'm surprised at how highly he's rated on here. I'm in the minority. I think people forget how far he fell away in a short space of time. He's loose with his defensive duties, seems a "step behind" the play, makes bad decisions under pressure. Any half-smart player can turn him inside out;...

Re: Roberton retires
Heartbreaking. Deserved to have a much better career than this. What an absolute travesty for the young man to be cut down in his prime. In that practice game last year, before his heart problem got him for a second time, he looked a cut above in defence, despite not having played for two years. He ...

Re: Tassie's Ultimation to AFL:
The time is coming to go for 20 teams - by the end of 2030. One will be in Tasmania by then. The question is where the other will be. I think, by then, Canberra will be tiring of GWS and agitating for their own team - a team that not only encompasses Canberra but Wagga Wagga and the southern NSW/bor...

Re: Grand Finalist predictions
Really, a nightmare GF, and I can't wait for it to be over. Richmond will do. The insufferably awful nature of Geelong fans has to tip it the Tigers' way. I can't bear the thought of Geelong fans getting in our faces, again. My god, every year is a reminder of how far we've slipped as a footy club o...

Re: Trauma - 10 years ago today
I look back at 2010 and think, well, on that day, we actually DID stand up as a footy club when it mattered - we saw our dreams materialise in all but premiership glory; we ran over a top team and effected a five-goal turnaround. I know we lost the Replay; but we didn't lose the Grand Final. I've ta...

So, here's the transcript. Honestly, it's not even half as bad as people think, and for what it's worth, I completely agree with Clarkson. (He's describing exactly what we did. And I do think it would be harder to execute that against better teams). And I think Ratten answered in a totally fine mann...

Disappointed Josh has battled at the Dogs. He gave a lot of for us, a real heart and soul player.
Can't argue about what we turned those picks into, effectively, but I always liked players who gave a big effort for the club and he certainly did that.

Re: How the Saints are Winning
I think we're incredibly overrated, both in here and by the media. We're 3-3. Twice we've coughed up 30+ leads and the other time, we were ripped apart at the MCG. Seriously, I don't get where all this fanatical optimism comes from. We haven't done any of the hard work required. The runs aren't on t...

Amazingly, Darren Minchington is still on the Hawks' list. Happy for him. He should have made just enough money to buy a decent house and take care of his family.

Re: Competitive Or Contenders? Asking For A Friend
Loving the optimism. But Beverage coached abysmally yesterday - and he was let down by his team. Why he didn't shift numbers behind the ball is beyond me, we grabbed so many easy goals from coast-to-coast plays. He backed his midfield to get on top but they never did and he didn't adjust. Other coac...

Re: What was your favourite St Kilda season?
Look, probably 1997, despite the unbelievable heartbreak - that to be honest I wasn't over until 2-3 years ago. The turnaround, from nowhere, and nothing, is unlikely to ever be repeated. Only 60 minutes from the ultimate season. We were so exciting - fast running, free flowing, big scores, massive ...

Re: Will Bassat save us from extinction/merger?
I'm not too worried. Between Andrew Bassatt, Gerry Ryan and Lindsay Fox, we have three fans worth in collective excess of $2 billion. They all love the club and I'm sure will band together to keep it going for a very long time. If that trio fails to step up, we have celebrity figures who can help dr...

There's criticism and then there's constructive criticism - huge difference. I've listened to the episodes and the boys do a really good job. The AFLW insights were excellent. Podcasts are different things to different people. This is what works for them - it's three mates having a chat about the Sa...

Re: Moorabbin's in our blood not the f****** JO.
The Junction Oval will always be a massive part of our history. I was quite excited about the possibility of a move there.
But there's no doubt that Moorabbin represents the spirit of the club in a way that nowhere else has managed, before or after. It will always be our home.

The entire list.
The whole coaching staff.
Every staff member.
The executive.
The board.
Legitimately, that's where I think we can improve.
