Re: Mongrel Punt's preview for the Saints

Actually, a very good review, and a very optimistic one. Certainly glass half-full - talks about what players can do, if they did it every week. I don't quite see it so rosily. I reckon we'll definitely play better, and maybe even slither into 7th or 8th, but probably 9-12th. So much needs to go rig...

Re: Jack New(ne)s article on the Hun

I think a 150-game player who gave us honest service deserves a bit better than some of the trash metered out to him. He wasn't a great player, he wasn't a bad player. He did his best. He lost his way a bit in his final few years, but there's no heard feelings from me and I wish him all the best wit...

That's great but we need Coffield and Bytel to step up and join him in 2020.

Re: Do you honestly think bringing in 5 traded players was the right move?

Really evortonfc? I'm not sure what we paid overs for in terms of what we missed out on??? Geez, look at the Hill trade. We paid market overs, both in contract and trade value. But Geelong paid market overs for an inconsistent Brad Ottens, and eventually he played a role in three flags. Sometimes, ...

Re: Do you honestly think bringing in 5 traded players was the right move?

I thought we paid overs for the players coming in and recieved unders for the players going out. With that said, our list looks better now, and there's no question we'd become stale. There is some expectation about the place - players simply simply have to lift their standards now. That's a good thi...

Re: Buckenara's rating of Byrnes FWIW

Ahhhh, the old myth about GB building Hawthorn's list... As one of the senior staff at Hawthorn puts it privately: "Thorp, Elstone, Dowler, Ellis, Bailey - we won flags in spite of 'Bucky's picks, although how do you let go of a favourite son?" So this absolutely does my head in every year...

Not that many sliders left. We're at pick 36. Jay Rantall, Trent Bianco and Hugo Ralphsmith still there. rantall gone Collingwood nab Bianco and Rantall. They're always keen to nab sliders - Nathan Murphy in 2017 at Pick 39 springs to mind. And Richmond take Ralphsmith. So that's basically it for t...

Hoping Luke Partington finds his way onto our list. Ticks absolutely every box. Magarey Medal in 2019. Improved hugely as SANFL season went on: "But the hard-running midfielder sprang to life from Round 7, as he attracted maximum votes from seven of eight matches, with Round 11 the only game he...

Re: lethlean heading to Essendon as CEO ..carro rumour

So many people got the hump when Lethlean was appointed and now they're getting the hump that he could be going. Fair dinkum. FWIW, on balance, he's done OK and gets a pass mark. (My only knock on him is an obscure one - that bloody podcast! Was very excited to hear that he was doing them, thinking ...

A wonderful win. Totally unexpected to get up off the canvas. A portent of things to come that year, although we did lose the next week to Freo. We had some wonderful battles over Collingwood in that period. The 1996 Centenary Game win was my favourite - such an enormous stage, such a historic momen...

Re: Max won't be thrown to the wolves

Time to temper expectations. Honestly, how many "gun" young KPP's have failed to hit the hype assigned to them: J Hogan, D Moore, J Daniher, T Boyd, P McCartin, J Schache, C McCarthey, J Patton. All have different reasons, but it shows just how hard it is for these guys to dominate the mod...

Always happy to have a go at state league talent, especially when they are big bodies. So many don't develop properly or realise if they can play until they are 21-22.

Re: 2020 Ladder Position Predictions

About 10th seems about right. The momentum around the club should push us up a few spots, but it'd be tricky to mount a case to say we're better than 8th (Essendon), 7th (Bulldogs) and 6th (GWS).

Re: Bailey Rice - At the crossroads?

Can play, but isn't fit enough by a long shot. He's 6-7kgs over what he should be. Doesn't have speed, doesn't have endurance. Exclusively relies on footy instinct. Which means he'll be a fantastic VFL and local player. He'll hate hearing that, but what can I say...you need to be super lean to play...

Interesting that people talk of "best wins" usually involving some kind of miracle comeback, or extremely hard-fought victory. I'd add Outstanding Performances. These are the best of the AFL era (+1989) that I can remember of the top of my head. Miracle comebacks 1994 - Swans (Plugger game...

Disappointed we didn't trade him out when he had value and had a good reputation for being a solid, decent player.

Definitely needed a new start but annoyed that he couldn't find his higher gears with us.

Life member, always welcome at the club. Had some quality years.

I still reckon he was a big "buy" at this price.

Potentially massive upside with absolutely nothing to spend.

Even if North delist him in two years, it cost them zilch. Outstanding trading.

Re: Let's Be Honest

Still a bit uneasy about things. I'm unsure about the culture, strategy and philosophy of our list, playing style and above all, our club. Until we solve the bigger issues that plague the club and where it is headed in the next 10-20 years, I think most of these changes are fairly cosmetic. I expect...
