Re: On a brighter note.
That's a pretty good result when you consider how few games we played at the MCG and we only got to pay the Filth once.JeffDunne wrote:2007 Home and Away Attendances for Each Club.

It's an average of a little over 39,200 per game.

More than playing Freo and WCE here have deflated them?evertonfc wrote:Can someone just get our home figures?
I reckon they're fairer to judge on. Big crowds against Sydney away, for example, I'd say have inflated our figure.
The fact that we choose to play home games against Richmond, Carlton, Essendon, Hawthorn and Collingwood (when we get one) at the Telstra Dome with a max capacity of around 50,000 limits our ability to climb the 'attendance ladder'.
WHat would Essendon's figure look like if you played the Anzac Day game and the Hird/Sheedy farewell against Richmond at the Dome instead of the G?
Collingwood had 16 games at the G. Play 8 of those at teh Dome and I reckon you could take 200-250k off their figure.

Our total attendances mean little if we arn't playing in September. We don't play footy to get people in the gates, other wise the Power and the Roos have failed this year despite both still being in the running for the flag this year. Surely we play to win premierships.JeffDunne wrote:What a strange comment.redwhite&blackblood wrote:Little comfort when your not playing in September!

Our 'big team' reputation pulls in opposition fans...clearly. We've got a pretty small travelling fan base, too, and we always seem to struggle to bring fans to the MCG or when we play away at the Dome.
I think we need to be averaging well over 40,000 per week per home game.

Don't we need 30,000 to break even on Home games at TD? From my understanding they changed the gate taking rules a couple of years ago so that the home team gets all of the gate profits? Unless by arrangement with the opposing club eg. Essendon and Collingwood for Anzac day the profits are split?

agree-it's amust to get crowds and members, crowds mean exposure- exposure means sponsors, sponsors bring more exposure and around it goes.saintlee wrote: Its not an either-or equation, big crowds raise revenue, revenue is spent on facilities and coaches, which in turn lead you to premierships....crowds figures are important to a clubs future
but still hard to compete against the 'blockbuster' Queens Birthday or Anzac day. How many from here are likely to go and watch Bulldogs vs Roos? But will go to the' event'- pies vs Bombers because its the 'day

Until you get a 30 game season where each team plays all other teams home and away, you really cannot make any sensible assesment.
We play Collingwood at the G and they get 60,000+ attendance, but don't play them at the Dome (our home game) and therefore our home attendance is affected by not having the opportunity to have a 45,000+ gate.
Instead we play home games against Freo, WCE and to a lesser extent Sydney which serve to deflate our home attendance average because the bulk of their fans don't come to H&A games in Melbourne.
The truth is you can make statistics 'work' for whichever side of the argument you want.

Exactly - and you could also say that the 65000 that attended the Sydney away game weren't there to watch the Swines - given they were below us on the "Attendance ladder". So they may have actually come along to watch us!!??Mr Magic wrote:I'm sorry to disagree on this one with you Everton.evertonfc wrote:Well, there's our answer.saintbrat wrote:http://stats.rleague.com/afl/crowds/stkilda.html

Not sure about that. Your argument doesn't seem to add up - which home games of ours would have drawn a bigger attendance at the MCG, given we didn't sell-out any of our Telstra Dome games?Mr Magic wrote:I'm sorry to disagree on this one with you Everton.evertonfc wrote:Well, there's our answer.saintbrat wrote:http://stats.rleague.com/afl/crowds/stkilda.html

Huh?
I didn't mention the MCG in my post. What I said was we had home games against low drawing clubs like Freo, WCE and Sydney but didn't have home game against Collingwood. Therefore we didn't have the opportunity to 'boost' our average by hosting the Pies at home. I'd be curious to know what the attendances were in the 2 games v Richmond and also the 2 games v Carlton.
What attendance did Melbourne get when they hosted Freo, PA, Adelaide, WCE, Sydney?
You were making the point that our away games were averaging lower than our home games.
If your opponent plays in a ground with a capacity twice yours how can you compare the figures?
Yes I would love to have a home attendance figure greater than 40,000 but that is an average of 80% of ground capacity. If you extrapolate that to the MCG it is equivalent to an average attendance of 80,000, which no-one does.
Again this is a case of me making statistics tell me what I want them to.
If I can presume to, JD was trying to point out that even in this season of 'doom and gloom' some things were positive. I got the impression that you were trying to negate that 'positive view?

We played more games in Melbourne this year ...
There were more teams in Melbourne who were successful than in the past 4 years.
Therefore more Melburnians turn up to the footy.
Crowd figures would be up for most of the Vic clubs in '07 ... simply because of the success of the majority of the teams ...

They should only play AFL games now when it's raining. Slow games of footy are so much better to watch.
